Box Score Three Hamilton College players scored twice in the Continentals' 16-8 setback against the nationally ranked No. 2 Amherst College Mammoths in the 2020 season opener for both teams at Amherst's Pratt Field at Lehrman Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Henry Hunt '20 and Britt Defeo '22 paced Hamilton with two goals and an assist apiece while Torben Wunderle '23 scored his first two goals with the Continentals.
Wunderle recorded his first collegiate goal and the first goal of the game with 12:52 left in the first quarter. Chris Conley '20 ran the ball from behind the net out in front and found Wunderle who scored with one second left on the shot clock.
Amherst scored four goals in nine minutes before the Continentals added another one. Marc Welch '22 deflected and picked up a Mammoth pass, ran end-to-end and found Hunt in front of the net to make it 4-2 with 39 seconds left in the first. Welch finished with seven ground balls and four caused turnovers.
The Hamilton defense held the Mammoths to three goals in the second quarter and trailed 7-2 at halftime.
Andrew Cox '20 scored 2:07 into the third quarter when he ran the ball up the left side, cut in and shot it from 10 yards out. Amherst recorded four more goals before Hamilton put another one on the board as Hunt scored again with 5:47 left in the third quarter. Defeo passed the ball to Hunt from across the field and Hunt jumped up for the pass and scored in mid-air.
The Mammoths scored two more times in the third and headed into the final quarter with a 13-4 advantage.
Hamilton outscored Amherst 4-3 in the final quarter. Defeo tallied a man-up goal after a behind-the-net pass from Ryan Friedman '21 with 5:45 left in the fourth. Wunderle scored his second goal with 4:07 remaining on an assist from his older brother Hagen Wunderle '21 who passed it from the restraining line. Friedman scored from the restraining line with 2:57 to go and Defeo notched his second goal on a low shot from the left side with 2:00 remaining.
Max Scheidl '21 made 18 saves while four Amherst goalies recorded 13 altogether. Hamilton picked up 33 ground balls and had 18 successful clears.
The Continentals will have their home opener on Wednesday, March 4 when they host Utica College at 5 p.m. on Withiam Field for the start of a three-game homestand.
