Arrix '19 nets first career goal in men's lacrosse setback

Box Score

St. John Fisher College scored four goals in the first quarter and the Cardinals posted a 13-4 non-conference win against the Hamilton College Continentals at Fisher's Growney Stadium in Pittsford, N.Y., on Tuesday afternoon.

Hamilton defenseman Rob Arrix '19 scored the first goal of his career, caused one turnover and scooped up two ground balls. Chad Morse '19, Clay McCollum '18 and Christian Hansson '19 added goals for the Continentals (1-7 overall). Morse has scored at least one goal in all eight games this season.

Austin Scronce '21 recorded two ground balls and one caused turnover, Chris Conley '20 dished out one assist, and Kyle Gately '20 made 11 saves. Eric Zurmuehle '18 won half of his 20 faceoffs and grabbed five ground balls.

Fisher (6-3) was guided by Zach Wagner's four goals and two assists for a career-high six points. Nicholas Miller and Chance Gates added two goals apiece, Andrew Rosso had one goal and one assist, and Jake Riley had two assists. Cole Fowler picked up a personal-best six ground balls and Mitch Rein caused two turnovers. Joe Post won 10 of 19 faceoffs and picked up seven ground balls. Justin Townsend earned the win by making six saves and allowing three goals in 51-plus minutes.

McCollum snapped the Cardinals' five-goal run at 9:02 in the second quarter when he shouldered past the defender in front of the net and ripped a shot into the upper-left corner. Gates gave the five-goal lead back to Fisher less than two minutes later before Hamilton scored two in a row.

After over-and-back turnovers by both teams in less than 10 seconds, Arrix did not hesitate when he shoveled the loose ball, exploded towards the goal and whipped a shot into the back of the nylon from 15 yards out. Morse cut Hamilton's deficit to three at 6-3 with 2:12 remaining in the second quarter off a feed from Conley. Hansson scored his first of the season with 12 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter.

The Continentals, who have played six straight games on the road, finally return home on Saturday, March 31 for a NESCAC game against Bates College at noon on Steuben Field.
