Box Score Hamilton College's Clay McCollum '19 scored three goals and assisted on another as the Continentals posted an 8-6 non-conference win against the St. John Fisher College Cardinals at Hamilton's Withiam Field on Tuesday.
The Continentals (3-5 overall) scored half of their eight goals in the third quarter. Hamilton is 2-0 against St. John Fisher -- the Continentals also defeated the Cardinals in Rochester in the 2016 season finale.
St. John Fisher (5-3) held a 36-30 shot advantage and committed just eight turnovers but scored the fewest goals Hamilton has allowed in a game so far this year. The Cardinals led once at 2-1 after one quarter and early in the second.
McCollum leads the Continentals with 15 goals and 19 points. Brock Bowers '20 chipped in a pair of goals and Henry Hill '19 added a goal and an assist. Matt Greene '18 led all players with four ground balls and Trip Connors '17 won 11 of 14 faceoffs. Noah Weissmann '18 started in goal for the third straight game and made seven saves in the first half. John Schisler '17 relieved Weissmann at the start of the third quarter and stopped five shots the rest of the way.
Nick Papayanakos paced St. John Fisher with two goals and an assist and Andrew Rosso posted a goal and two helpers. Drew Brown contributed a goal and an assist and TJ VanDeusen notched a goal and a team-high three ground balls. Tanner Swan turned away 10 shots including four in the fourth quarter.
Hamilton took the lead for good with three goals in the opening five minutes of the third quarter. Bowers put the Continentals on top 4-3 just 49 seconds into the third and Jack Gaul '18 made it a two-goal advantage 1:13 later with his fifth this year. McCollum gave Hamilton a 6-3 cushion with 10:06 left in the third.
VanDeusen responded with a goal for the Cardinals 25 seconds after McCollum's tally. Papayanakos, who passed to VanDeusen for his goal, pulled St. John Fisher within one on his own score with 4:00 remaining in the third.
Hill restored the Continentals' two-goal lead at 7-5 on his seventh goal with 3.1 seconds to go in the third. Papayanakos drew the Cardinals within one again with 8:00 left in the fourth quarter but a St. John Fisher player was given a 60-second penalty for an illegal stick 16 seconds later while officials checked equipment during a Hamilton timeout. The Continentals made the Cardinals pay as Hill found McCollum for the game's final goal with 4 seconds left on the extra-man opportunity.
St. John Fisher took five shots down the stretch but only two were on goal. VanDeusen forced Schisler to make a save with about 20 seconds remaining.
Glenn Roschetzky and Brown scored goals 66 seconds apart midway through the first quarter and the Cardinals held a 2-1 lead after one. Bowers tied the score with 12:48 to go in the second quarter and Chad Morse '19 put Hamilton back in front at 3-2 on a man-up goal with 4:15 left. The Continentals scored on both of their extra-man chances. Rosso tied things up again exactly two minutes later and the teams went into the break deadlocked at 3-3. Rosso and Papayanakos are tied for the team lead with 16 goals apiece.
Hamilton plays the first of three straight NESCAC road games on Saturday, April 1 at nationally ranked No. 6 Bates College at 1 p.m.
