Men's lacrosse edged 9-7 at Connecticut College

Box Score

Connecticut College scored all three goals in the fourth quarter and the Camels rallied for a 9-7 NESCAC win against the Hamilton College Continentals at Connecticut College's Freeman Field on Saturday afternoon.

Hamilton (3-9, 1-8 NESCAC) led 7-6 after three quarters but Wyatt Tompkins tied the score on a man-up goal just as a 60-second penalty on the Continentals expired with 7:31 left. Tompkins tallied the game-winner just 48 seconds later and Jordan Foster added an insurance goal with 1:07 remaining.

Clay McCollum '19 paced Hamilton with three goals and J.D. Brachman '17 scored twice. Sam Sweet '16 chipped in a goal and an assist, and Joe Ricciuti '16 notched his 14th goal. Eric Zurmuehle '18 won half of the 18 faceoffs he took and scooped up seven ground balls. John Schisler '17 made nine saves.

Tompkins finished with three goals for the Camels (7-6, 3-5). PJ Kelleher recorded two goals and an assist, Ross Thompson posted a goal and two helpers and Foster found the back of the net twice. Ben Parens won 10 faceoffs and picked up six ground balls. Penn Sednaoui led all players with eight ground balls and Bobby Bleistein stopped nine shots.

The Continentals received an early break when a 30-second penalty was assessed to Connecticut College just 20 seconds into the first quarter. McCollum scored a man-up goal with 14:21 to go in the first and Ricciuti made it 2-0 with 12:32 left. Hamilton ended up 2-for-3 on extra-man opportunities.

The Camels tied the score on goals by Thompson and John Cunningham before Sweet put the Continentals back in front with 4:04 remaining in the first. Tompkins knotted the score and then Kelleher gave Connecticut College a 4-3 lead with 1 second to go in the quarter.

Hamilton moved back in front on two goals by Brachman -- the first of which was assisted by Jack Gaul '18 -- with 8:50 left in the second quarter. With 7:42 to play before the half, Schisler denied Tompkins with a spectacular stop right on his door step at the near-post side of the goal. Foster pulled the Camels even again on a man-up goal with 3:48 remaining. The teams went into the break tied at 5-5.

The score remained tied until 3:47 to go in the third quarter when McCollum notched his second man-up goal of the day off a pass from Adam Markhoff '18. Kelleher forged the fifth tie score of the afternoon with 1:10 left and McCollum put the Continentals up 7-6 on his 21st goal with 5 seconds remaining.

Ricciuti had a terrific bid to tie the score when he broke free on the left side of the box and unloaded a low blast on the cage. But Bleistein was able to break down and get his stick in front of it for the key save.

Hamilton hosts Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute at Campus Road Athletic Complex on Tuesday, April 19 at 6 p.m.
