Men's lacrosse upsets No. 19 Keene State in Florida

Box Score

Hamilton College's Clay McCollum '19 posted five points and led the Continentals to a 12-11 non-conference win against the nationally ranked No. 19 Keene State College Owls at Northeast Regional Park in Davenport, Fla., on Tuesday.

Hamilton (3-1 overall) scored the first two goals and led the entire game. The Continentals are one of 10 teams on the "Also Receiving Votes" portion of this week's Division III Top 20 coaches poll.

McCollum finished with two goals and three assists in just his fourth collegiate game. Pat Donahoe '16 scored three goals and Sam Sweet '16 chipped in two goals and two assists. Joe Ricciuti '16 tallied a pair of goals and J.D. Brachman '17, Ryan McCausland '16 and Dan Cahill '17 contributed one each.

John Schisler '17 made a career-high 17 saves in his first start since Hamilton's 11-10 victory at Colby College on March 5. The Continentals dominated Keene State in faceoffs as Eric Zurmuehle '18 won 23 of 25 and Trip Connors '17 won both of the faceoffs he took.

For the Owls (2-2), Tyler Reilly and Tyler McKelvie scored three goals apiece. Bryan Rotatori posted a goal and three assists, and Hunter Arnold had a goal and two helpers. Rob Hart scored twice and Mitch Hale added the other goal.

Donahoe opened the scoring 48 seconds into the first quarter and Brachman made it 2-0 just 38 seconds later. McCausland scored on a pass from Jack Gaul '18 with 4:29 left and Hamilton led 3-1 after one quarter.

The Continentals led 4-3 late in the second quarter when they went on a five-goal run that put them in control. McCollum started the spurt on an unassisted goal with 2:14 remaining and passed to Cahill for another goal 1:02 later. Hamilton held a 6-3 cushion at the break.

Donahoe made it a four-goal lead 1:08 into the third quarter and Ricciuti capped the run with two goals. Ricciuti's second score came with 9:26 to go in the third while the Continentals enjoyed a two-man advantage. McCollum was credited with the assist on the man-up tally.

Hamilton still led 10-7 after three quarters and Sweet made it a four-goal cushion just a few seconds into a man-up opportunity with 11:08 left. After Keene State cut its deficit to three about a minute later, McCollum made it 12-8 on a pass from Sweet with 8:52 remaining.

The Owls clawed back to within a goal with 1:04 to go when McKelvie scored on a feed from Rotatori while a flag was down for a delayed penalty on the Continentals. Hamilton survived the frantic last 64 seconds despite playing down a man due to the two-minute infraction for contact to the head.

The Continentals take on NESCAC rival Bowdoin College for another game down in Florida on Saturday, March 19, at noon.
