CLINTON, N.Y. – Hamilton College's
Maddigan Leifer '26 had three points during a four-goal run that put the Continentals ahead for good in their 13-9 NESCAC win against the Bowdoin College Polar Bears at Hamilton's damp and cool Steuben Field on Saturday afternoon, March 29.
Season Update
- The Continentals (3-4, 1-4 NESCAC) have alternated wins and losses for the past five games.
- Bowdoin (4-5, 0-5) lost for the third time in its last four games.
How It Happened
- The Polar Bears scored four straight goals in the second quarter and drew even with Hamilton at 6-6 with 6:38 left.
- The Continentals countered with the last two goals of the second and first two of the third quarter and led the rest of the way.
- Leyna Schlaefer '28 started the run with a goal on a free-position shot with 38.9 seconds remaining in the first half.
- Hamilton's Julia Lee '27 won the ensuing draw and passed to Leifer. She made a couple moves on the right side and found Sarah Stonestreet '25 just outside the top of the crease. Stonestreet turned and fired a shot from close range inside the left post with 20.5 seconds to go.
- The Continentals received possession to start the third quarter after Bowdoin received a green card and went down a player for one minute with six seconds left in the second. Hamilton made the Polar Bears pay 57 seconds into the third. Leifer passed to Alex Orlando '25, who was two steps outside the fan, and Orlando split two defenders, ran straight towards the goal and scored.
- Leifer made it 10-6 with 12:26 remaining on a free-position shot after Clara Paolucci '28 had made a save at the other end of the field.
- Bowdoin scored the next two goals and cut its deficit in half with 7:28 to go in the third.
- Aine Cleary '25 scored for the Continentals with 5:50 left, but Lauren Burke drew the Polar Bears within 11-9 just 50 seconds later with her 27th goal.
- Hamilton held Bowdoin scoreless during the final 20 minutes. Orlando and Avery Trach '27 found the back of the net for the Continentals in the fourth quarter and accounted for the final margin.
- Hamilton led 4-2 after the first quarter and Sarah Creamer '26 and Lee scored in the first four minutes of the second quarter for a 6-2 advantage.
Notes
- Orlando set season highs with three goals and four points, and tied a career best with four ground balls. She's tied for the team lead with 15 ground balls.
- Leifer handed out a career-high three assists and matched a career best with four points.
- Cleary, Lee and Creamer chipped in two goals each. Lee leads the team with 15 goals and 18 points. Cleary scooped up three ground balls.
- Stonestreet registered a goal and an assist. She leads the team with eight helpers.
- Lily Goldsmith '28 picked up two assists for her first multi-assist game.
- Schlaefer scored her first collegiate goal.
- Marin Ciardiello '26 collected her second assist.
- Anna Zoccolillo '25 tied a career high with three caused turnovers.
- Kristin Vosswinkel '27, who hadn't won more than three draw controls in a game, came up with seven.
- Paolucci finished with seven saves including four in the second quarter.
- Molly Reed (four goals) and Burke (three goals, assist) paced the Polar Bears' offense. Reed also won seven draws. Grace Harvey caused three turnovers and Kate Min and Kate Mautz had three ground balls apiece.
- The teams have split their last 14 meetings.
