Women's lacrosse hangs with No. 1 Middlebury deep into fourth in 12-7 loss

Big game for Orlando '25 as the Continentals were still within two goals midway through the final quarter

CLINTON, N.Y. – Middlebury College took the lead for good with five straight goals in the second quarter and the Panthers went on to a 12-7 NESCAC win against the Hamilton College Continentals at Hamilton's Steuben Field on Sunday afternoon, March 30.
 

Season Update

  • The Continentals (3-5, 1-5 NESCAC) have alternated losses and wins for the past seven games.
  • Nationally ranked No. 1 Middlebury (10-0, 6-0) extended its win streak to 61 contests.
 

How It Happened

  • The Panthers' second quarter run turned a 4-2 deficit after the first 15 minutes into a 7-4 advantage at the half. Caroline Adams scored three of the five goals.
  • Hamilton pulled within two goals twice in the second half. Sophia Wright '28 made it 7-5 with 9:07 left in the third quarter, and Wright's free-position goal drew the Continentals within 9-7 with 10:45 remaining in the fourth quarter.
  • Hamilton had two chances to cut Middlebury's lead to one, but the possessions ended in turnovers.
  • The Panthers finally started to pull away with 6:50 to go when Sophia Lee scored on a free-position shot. Kylie Wilson and Kelcey Dion scored the last two goals in the final four minutes.
  • Adams scored the first goal with 11:16 left in the first quarter, but the Continentals rattled off the next three for a 3-1 lead with 6:39 remaining. Alex Orlando '25 sandwiched two goals around one by Maddigan Leifer '26.
  • After Skylar Lach trimmed Hamilton's lead to one with 1:57 to go, Orlando struck again on a feed from Sarah Stonestreet '25 with 13.8 seconds left.
 

Notes

  • Orlando was a force on offense and defense as she scored three goals for the second time in as many days, tied a career high with four ground balls and added a career-best three caused turnovers. She is fifth in the NESCAC with 2.38 ground balls per game
  • Wright recorded her first multi-goal game with two and has three this season.
  • Lily Goldsmith '28 registered multiple points for the second straight day with a goal and an assist.
  • Leifer has scored at least one goal in six straight games.
  • Stonestreet picked up her team-leading ninth assist.
  • Anna Zoccolillo '25 and Grace Martucci '28 caused two turnovers apiece. Martucci is second in the conference with 2.00 per game.
  • Clara Paolucci '28 made five of her eight saves in the first quarter.
  • Middlebury's Adams led all players with four goals and eight draw controls. Lach ended up with two goals and an assist. Maggie Coughlin had a goal, two assists and three ground balls.
  • Hope Shue won seven draws. Gina Driscoll came up with four saves, three ground balls and two caused turnovers.
  • The Panthers held an 18-5 advantage in draw controls and scored a goal on 4-of-11 free-position shots.
 

Next Game

The Continentals are on the road for another NESCAC game at Trinity College (5-3, 2-2) on Saturday, April 5 at noon.
