Hamilton College topped a five-boat field in the men's varsity eight in the Jennifer McLaughlin Cup hosted by Worcester Polytechnic Institute on Lake Quinsigamond on Saturday morning.
 
Hamilton posted a winning time of 6:14.58 on the 2,000-meter course. WPI finished just 43 hundredths of a second behind the Continentals while Wesleyan University was third in 6:18.2. Colby College landed in fourth place with a time of 6:26.45 and the University of Massachusetts-Amherst ended up in fifth place in 6:42.61.
 
Racing conditions included a stiff crosswind at the start and a tailwind for most of the rest of the course.
 
"Good to see early-season racing on Lake Quinsigamond with many teams that we have not raced in a couple of years," Head Coach James Lister said. "All our boats showed moments of good boat speed and handled the high wind conditions pretty well. The men's V8, women's 2V8, and women's 3V8 won their respective races. We return to Worcester on Sunday to see another strong fleet of teams."
 
Runner-up Hamilton finished a little more than 17 seconds behind WPI with a time of 6:49.93 in the second varsity eight. UMass-Amherst and Wesleyan took up the last two spots. The Continentals finished just under a second behind race winner WPI in the third varsity eight with a time of 6:30.15.
 
Hamilton competes in the WPI Regatta back on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass., on Sunday, April 10. Racing starts at 9 a.m.
