Box Score Hamilton College picked up its first win in team history over NESCAC foe Bowdoin College as the Continentals edged the Polar Bears 8-7 on Saturday afternoon at Hamilton's Withiam Field.
Charlie Ratner '22 guided the Continentals (2-1, 1-1 NESCAC) with two goals and three assists while Torben Wunderle '23 and Henry Hunt '20 scored one goal and had two assists apiece. Matt Mirkovic '22, Chris Conley '20, Ryan Friedman '21 and Tim Sommer '22 all scored one goal and Hagen Wunderle '21 recorded one assist.
Quin Crowley '22 won nine faceoffs and picked up a team-high five ground balls. Conley, Hagen Wunderle and Marc Welch '22 had three ground balls each. Max Scheidl '21 made 17 saves and picked up his second win this year.
Bowdoin (0-2, 0-2) scored two goals 40 seconds apart early in the first quarter for a 2-0 lead. Conley put Hamilton on the board with 8:32 left in the first, Ratner tied it up on a man-up goal with 6:58 remaining, and Friedman gave Hamilton a 3-2 edge 30 seconds later. The Polar Bears tied the score at 3-3 at the 4:47 mark.
Mirkovic put the Continentals up 4-3 with 7:34 left in the second quarter, but Bowdoin scored 50 seconds later and the teams went into the break tied at 4-4. The Polar Bears took a 5-4 lead with 5:23 to go in the third quarter. Hunt tied the score with 2:54 left in the third and Ratner scored another man-up goal with 21 seconds remaining for a 6-5 advantage.
Bowdoin scored two goals in the first minute of the fourth quarter and took a 7-6 edge. Torben Wunderle tied the score with 4:22 remaining and Sommer scored the game-winner at the 3:46 mark. The Polar Bears' best chance to tie the score again came with just under two minutes to go when a shot by Jake Crossman hit the post.
The Continentals are back home on Tuesday, March 10 for a non-conference game against Hartwick College at 4:30 p.m. on Withiam Field.
