Box Score Hamilton College's Morgan Hartranft '22 and Claire O'Brien '21 combined on a two-hit shutout and the Continentals pulled out a 1-0 NESCAC West Division win against the Wesleyan University Cardinals at Hamilton's Loop Road Softball/Baseball Complex on Sunday.
The Continentals (18-6, 2-4 NESCAC West) scored the only run they needed in the bottom of the fourth inning. Hamilton won two out of three games in the weekend series. The Continentals rallied for a 7-6 victory in the opener and Wesleyan countered with a 9-3 triumph in Saturday's doubleheader.
Hartranft (9-3) didn't allow a hit until there were two outs in the sixth inning. She pitched 6.2 innings and allowed two hits and two walks. Hartranft is second in the conference with nine wins and fifth with a 2.08 earned run average and .198 batting average against.
Danielle Rinaldi started in the circle for the Cardinals (9-14, 1-5) and gave up one run on four hits and a walk in four innings. Brenna Monroe pitched two perfect innings in relief.
Hamilton's Emily Fraser '20 led off the fourth with a walk, moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Liz Brautigam '19, and hurried to third on a ground ball to the pitcher. Kendall Searcy '20 drove in Fraser with a single through the right side that skipped just out of the shortstop's reach.
In the sixth inning Wesleyan's Sophia Sciarappa smacked a two-out double off the base of the wall in left field near the 200-foot sign, and Continentals head coach Stephanie Hartquist replaced Hartranft with O'Brien. Sciarappa advanced to third on a wild pitch and Monroe drew a walk, but O'Brien escaped the jam by getting the next batter to hit a ground ball back to herself.
Olivia Gorman led off the top of the seventh with a walk and Hartranft was sent back out to the circle to snuff the rally. She got the next two batters to hit infield pop-ups before Lauren Gaffney-Gomez looped a single into shallow center field. With runners on first and second and two out, Courtney Collins-Pisano hit a sharp ground ball to first base that Ashleah Yzaguirre '19 gobbled up and beat Collins-Pisano to the bag.
Hamilton had chances to score in the early innings. Helen Lin '19 cracked a double to deep left center with one out in the second inning but was left stranded at second base. In the third Caitlin Berreitter '20 hammered a triple to left field with one out but the Cardinals kept her from advancing by making two solid defensive plays. Yzaguirre smashed a hard shot to third base that went in and out of Monroe's glove and she narrowly threw out Yzaguirre at first to end the inning.
