Softball defeated by RPI in midweek doubleheader

Rogers ’26 recorded four hits on the day

TROY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Engineers won both contests of a non-conference doubleheader against the Hamilton College Continentals at RPI's Doris Robinson Field on Tuesday, April 21.

Season Update

  • Hamilton (8-23 overall) was coming off a 14-2 win at Bates on Saturday, April 18.
  • RPI (21-11) currently holds a 6-4 record in Liberty League play.

Game 1 (RPI wins, 5-0)

How It Happened

  • Hamilton's Nikki Dyche '28 ripped a leadoff double in the top of the second, but RPI starting pitcher Callie Volker retired the next three hitters and stranded her on third.
  • The Engineers grabbed a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third following a two-run ground-rule double by Callista Adorno.
  • RPI extended its lead to 5-0 in the fifth via an RBI double by Evann McDowell and back-to-back sacrifice flies by Addison Shaffer and Maddy Brooks.
  • Hamilton put runners on second and third in the sixth but was unable to get on the board.

Notes

  • Hadley Rogers '26, Miranda Mosqueda '28 and Dyche each recorded a hit for Hamilton, while Jess Chieco '29 and Sammy Morris '29 both drew a walk.
  • McDowell recorded a game-high two hits for RPI, while Sydney Speanburg scored a game-high two runs with one hit and two walks.
  • Hamilton's Yael Everett '28 recorded three strikeouts in six innings pitched.
  • Volker collected the win after allowing two hits and one walk with three strikeouts in four innings.
 

Game 2 (RPI wins, 10-5)

  • The Engineers jumped out to an 8-0 lead after two innings, capped by a grand slam home run to left field by Shaffer.
  • Hamilton cut its deficit in half with four runs in the top of the fifth. The Continentals recorded seven consecutive singles, with Gaby Guerra '28, Dyche, Juliana Abraham '29 and Kelsey Vadnais '28 each driving in a run.
  • A two-run triple by Ryleigh Falvey increased RPI's lead to 10-4 in the bottom of the fifth.
  • Abraham drove in Everett on a sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh.

Notes

  • Abraham went 2-for-3 with a team-high two runs batted in. She has recorded two hits in three of her last five games played.
  • Rogers went 3-for-4 at the plate with one run and a double. She leads the team with 33 hits on the year and a .351 batting average. 
  • Dyche, Alexis Mayer '26 and Mosqueda each registered two hits and one run.
  • Aubrey Purvis '27 recorded three strikeouts with four hits and two runs allowed across 4.1 innings in relief.
  • Adorno registered three hits, two runs and one RBI, while Maddy Brooks went 3-for-3 with one run and one RBI for the Engineers.

Next Game

Hamilton will return home for a NESCAC doubleheader against Amherst College on Saturday, April 25 beginning at noon.
