Baseball drops pair of one-run games at Trinity

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Three Trinity College pitchers combined on a two-hit shutout in Game 2 and the Bantams swept a non-conference doubleheader from the Hamilton College Continentals at Trinity's DiBenedetto Stadium at Murren Family Field on Saturday afternoon.

Hamilton (13-14 overall) had its chances to take one if not both games in this matchup that featured one team from the NESCAC West Division (the Continentals) and one from the NESCAC East Division (the Bantams). Trinity won the opener 9-8 in eight innings and prevailed 1-0 in the nightcap. The Bantams (23-5) received votes in the D3baseball.com/NCBWA poll and the American Baseball Coaches Association Division III poll.

Hamilton is back home for a non-conference game against St. Lawrence University on Tuesday, April 23 at 4 p.m.

Game 1 (Trinity 9, Hamilton 8)

Trinity took a big lead early, let it slip away, fell behind in extra innings and rallied for the victory. The Bantams jumped out to a 6-0 lead after two innings only to surrender that advantage as the Continentals scored at least one run every inning from the fourth through the eighth. After Hamilton grabbed an 8-6 edge in the top of the eighth, Trinity won the game with three runs in the bottom of the inning.

Craig Sandford '19 singled, doubled and drove in a career-high four runs for the Continentals. He also stole a base. Gavin Schaefer-Hood '21 went 2-for-4 with a double and a walk, Matt Cappelletti '21 was 2-for-2 with a double and two runs batted in, Rich Marooney '21 singled twice and walked, and Jarrett Lee '21 cracked a pinch-hit double. Sam Thoreen '22, Brett Sandford '19 and Justin Schirmacher '20 combined to pitch four scoreless innings in relief.

Johnny Stamatis hit a two-run homer in the second inning, walked twice and scored three runs for the Bantams. Alex Rodriguez singled, doubled and drove in two runs, and Mack Lauder blasted a solo home run in the second inning. Ben Reinisch, Brett Stevenson and Geoff Stillman finished with two hits each. John Spaller pitched the eighth and picked up his first win.

Cappelletti gave Hamilton an 8-6 lead in the eighth inning with a two-run double down the left field line, but Trinity rallied with three two-out runs. Stevenson's two-RBI single to center field drove in the tying and winning runs.

The Continentals started their comeback in the fourth inning with a run-scoring single to center by Adam Wijaya '22. Hamilton pulled within 6-4 on Sandford's bases-clearing double down the right field line in the fifth inning and tied the score in the seventh when Sandford drove in another run with a single.

Game 2 (Trinity 1, Hamilton 0)

The Bantams scored the game's lone run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Stamatis led off with a walk, stole second and tagged up and headed to third on Lauder's flyout to center field. The throw to third base was off target and Stamatis scored.

The Continentals' best chances to score came in the fourth and sixth innings. Schaefer-Hood led off the fourth with a walk and went to second on a ground ball back to the pitcher, but was thrown out at home on a double by James Nish '19. In the sixth Ethan Wallis '21 walked and went to second on a sacrifice bunt. Matt Zaffino '21 put runners at the corners with a single and then stole second. Trinity escaped trouble by getting the next two batters to pop out to the shortstop and ground out to the second baseman.

Kenny Gray '20 started on the mound for Hamilton and tossed three hitless innings with three strikeouts. Jamie Hauswirth '22 took the loss after he gave up one unearned run on a hit and a walk in two innings. Carl Maxwell '22 threw a scoreless sixth inning.

Cameron Crowley improved his record to 5-0 after allowing one hit through 5.1 innings. Will Simeone earned his second save with a perfect seventh inning.
