No. 16 Williams inches past Hamilton in NESCAC West opener

Box Score

Williams College scored four runs off two homers and the nationally ranked No. 16 Ephs posted a 4-2 NESCAC West Division win against the Hamilton College Continentals at Williams' Cole Field in Williamstown, Mass., on Friday evening.

The Continentals outhit the Ephs 7-4. Caroline Chivily '19 was the only player on either team to record multiple hits, finishing 2-for-3 with two singles. Liz Brautigam '19 hit a solo home run, and both Caitlin Berreitter '20 and Emily Fraser '20 hit doubles.

Morgan Hartranft '22 (7-2) had a strong showing in the pitching circle for Hamilton (14-3, 0-1 NESCAC West), giving up just one earned run on four hits and three walks with one strikeout through five innings.

Berreitter led off the game with a double to right-center field and Vicky Dunn '22 laid down a sacrifice bunt back to the pitcher to move Berreitter to third. Dunn capitalized on a throwing error to reach first base and advance to second as Berreitter scored.

Hartranft sat down the Ephs 1-2-3 in the bottom half of the first. Kendall Searcy '20 gobbled up two grounders at shortstop for the first two outs, and Hartranft handled a sharp grounder back to the circle to end the inning.

Williams (13-4, 1-0) gained a 4-1 advantage off two home runs that accounted for three unearned runs. Kirstin Mapes sent the first pitch that she saw over the fence in left center to tie the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the second. Mackenzie Murphy then hit a 3-run homer to center field with two outs in the third.

Hartranft again made quick work of the Ephs in the bottom of the fourth. Searcy handled a grounder for the first out, Berreitter snagged a line drive down the third-base line for the second out and she scooped up a ground ball to end the inning.

Williams threatened to break the game open in the sixth inning with just one out and the bases loaded. Riley Salvo hit a leadoff triple down the right-field line just beyond the diving attempt by Kiana Arcayena '22 (1-for-3). Rachel Neugart earned a pinch-hit walk that put runners on the corners before Claire O'Brien '21 relieved Hartranft. O'Brien forced a popup to first base for the first out before she hit the next batter to load the bases. Jenny Hickey thought she had a guaranteed sacrifice fly to right field but Arcayena ended the inning with a double play as she made the catch and threw a dart home that beat Salvo to the plate by five steps.

After applying the tag at home plate to end the sixth, Brautigam (1-for-3) cut Hamilton's deficit in half by launching the ball over the fence in right-center field for the second home run of her career. Chivily hit a one-out single to right field and advanced to second on a groundout, but a fly ball to left field caught in foul territory concluded the Continentals' comeback attempt.

The Continentals and the Ephs wrap up the three-game series with a noon doubleheader on Saturday in Williamstown.
