Box Score Hamilton College setter Emma Parkhurst '21 did a little bit of everything in the Continentals' three-set NESCAC win over the Colby College Mules at Hamilton's Margaret Bundy Scott Field House on Saturday afternoon.
Hamilton (8-7, 2-4 NESCAC) posted a .243 hitting percentage while Colby hit just .048 as a team with 21 attack errors in 105 attempts. The set scores were 25-19, 25-20 and 25-22.
The 5-foot, 9-inch Parkhurst finished with 31 assists, 15 digs, two service aces and two blocks. Giuliana Rankin '20 hammered 17 kills and had just two errors in 34 attempts for a .441 hitting percentage. Rankin leads the conference with 3.57 kills per set and is second with 175 this fall. Deirdre Corrigan '23 smashed 10 kills, Dorothy Poucher '21 served two aces, including the 100th of her collegiate career, and Kendall Boxe '22 was credited with three blocks. Nikki Matsuoka '21 added 14 digs and Kendall Searcy '20 had 11.
Nicole Petherbridge paced the Mules (5-14, 1-6) with 10 kills and three aces. Natalie Simonton contributed seven kills, Morgan Selby passed out 14 assists and Julia Hutchings ended up with a match-high 17 digs.
The Continentals opened the first set with a 4-0 run and led the rest of the way. Colby pulled within a point at 9-8, but Hamilton rattled off nine of the next 11 for an 18-10 cushion. A kill by Corrigan clinched the set.
The Continentals got off to another fast start in the second set as they grabbed a 4-1 lead. The Mules trailed by just two points at 7-5, but a 10-2 spurt gave Hamilton a comfortable margin. Colby made the Continentals nervous with a late 9-2 run that pulled the Mules within three points at 23-20. Hamilton squashed Colby's comeback hopes on a kill by Jane Fanning '22 and an attack error by the Mules.
The Continentals had a much more difficult time putting Colby away in the third set as there were six ties and six lead changes. Neither team led by more than three points until a 5-0 run midway through the set gave the Mules a 13-9 advantage. Hamilton still trailed 18-15 when the Continentals went in front for good with six consecutive points. A kill by Corrigan started the run and another kill by Rankin ended it at 21-18. In between there were three attack errors and a bad set by Colby. The Mules made it interesting with three straight points and pulled within one at 23-22. Hamilton closed out the match on a Rankin kill and a bad set by the Mules.
The Continentals compete in the North Jersey Challenge on Friday, Oct. 18 at Kean University. Hamilton plays Kean at 6 p.m. and takes on the University of Northwestern (Minn.) at 8.
