Box Score The Middlebury College Panthers scored one run in the eighth inning to inch past the Hamilton College Continentals 2-1 in a makeup NESCAC West Division game at Williams College's Cole Field on Sunday.
The game was originally scheduled at Middlebury on April 14 as part of a three-game series, but poor weather forced the game to be postponed and Williams hosted the game for the convenience of both teams' travel schedules.
Middlebury's Allison Quigley reached first base on an error to lead off the bottom of the eighth, moved to third base on Melanie Mandell's double down the left field line and scored when Liza Tarr hit a walk off single to center field.
The Continentals (11-19 overall, 2-7 NESCAC West) totaled four hits and the Panthers had eight in the pitcher's duel between Hamilton's Dez DePaulis '19 and Middlebury's Emily Morris. DePaulis pitched a complete game and allowed just one earned run with one walk and had two strikeouts. Morris had three strikeouts and she hit two batters through eight innings.
Middlebury (14-10, 3-6) jumped out to a 1-0 lead with two hits in the bottom of the first inning. Following two groundouts to Phoebe Collins '18 at second base, Quigley doubled to left center field and scored when Mandell followed with a double to the opposite gap. Mandell was left stranded when Tarr flied out to center field for the third out of the inning.
Caitlin Berreitter '20 gave Hamilton the opportunity to get on the scoreboard when she was hit by a pitch to lead off the game in the top of the first inning, and Kendall Searcy '20 dropped down a sacrifice bunt to move her to second. Berreitter advanced to third when Emily Fraser '20 grounded out to the right side of the infield, but Middlebury's Morris tallied her first strikeout of the afternoon to end the inning.
Five innings later, in the top of the sixth, the Continentals redeemed themselves when again Berreitter was hit by a pitch to start the inning and moved to second base on Searcy's sacrifice bunt. Fraser legged out an infield single to move Berreitter to third, and Berreitter crossed home plate on Brautigam's squeeze bunt back to the pitcher.
Brautigam, Fraser, Helen Lin '19 and Caroline Chivily '19 accounted for Hamilton's four hits. Brautigam batted in one run and Lin hit a double in the fifth inning. Berreitter was hit by two pitches and Searcy had two sacrifice bunts.
Mandell led the Panthers with three doubles and one RBI. Quigley hit a double and scored both Middlebury runs, and Volpe went 1-for-3 with a stolen base. With the victory, the Panthers win the three-game series.
Hamilton wraps up its regular season at home next weekend with a three-game series against Amherst College in NESCAC West action. The Continentals and Mammoths play a single game on Friday at 5 p.m. and a noon doubleheader on Saturday.
