Box Score 2 The Hamilton College softball team wrapped up a three-game NESCAC West Division series with a doubleheader split against the Wesleyan University Cardinals in Middletown, Conn. on Saturday afternoon. The Continentals fell 9-5 in the first game before taking the second 7-4. Wesleyan won the game on Friday night 9-6 to win the series.
Hamilton heads to Williamstown, Mass. on Sunday for a makeup NESCAC West game against Middlebury College, hosted by Williams College at noon.
Game Two: Hamilton 7, Wesleyan 4
Caitlin Berreitter '20 went 2-for-5 with a double, two stolen bases, one run batted in and she scored two runs. Kendall Searcy '20 went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Emily Fraser '20 scored three runs and had one hit. Ashleah Yzaguirre '19 and Helen Lin '19 both added an RBI. Dez DePaulis '19 entered the game in the middle of the third inning and gave up just one run on four hits and one walk for her fourth win of the season.
Danielle Rinaldi led Wesleyan with three hits. Brenna Monroe went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a walk. Julia McDonald walked twice at the plate and took the loss in the pitching circle by allowing two earned runs on five hits and one walk.
Hamilton scored two runs on one hit in the first inning. Berreitter hit an infield single to kick off the game and then stole second base. Three straight Wesleyan errors loaded the bases and scored the Continentals' first run of the inning. Lin then worked out a walk with the bases loaded to give Hamilton a 2-0 lead.
The Continentals added one run in the top of the third when Yzaguirre knocked an RBI-single through the right side of the infield to score Fraser from third base, but Wesleyan tied the score 3-3 with three runs off three hits in the bottom half of the inning.
Hamilton quickly took back the lead with a four-run fourth inning. Phoebe Collins '18 singled to right center field to lead off the inning and moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Zoe Singer '18. Berreitter switched places with Collins when she blasted a double to left center and scored on Searcy's single up the middle. Fraser was hit by a pitch to put two runners on, and the Cardinals' center fielder misplayed the ball of the bat of Caroline Chivily '19 which allowed Searcy and Fraser to score.
Wesleyan loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning and managed to score one run before DePaulis forced a groundout to end the game.
Game One: Wesleyan 9, Hamilton 5
Hamilton scored three runs on four hits to jump out to an early lead in the first inning. Berreitter singled through the left side and stole second. Searcy followed with a single to advance Berreitter to third and then stole second, and back-to-back squeeze bunts by Brautigam and Lin scored Berreitter and Searcy. Brautigam was called out on a double steal attempt for the second out of the inning before Lin scored on a wild pitch.
Searcy hit a two-out double to left center field to score Chivily in the top of the second, extending Hamilton's lead to 4-0. Wesleyan began the comeback with two runs in the bottom of the second off three hits and two errors, but left the bases loaded when McDonald grounded to third and Hamilton's Berreitter stepped on the base.
The Cardinals took the 5-4 lead in the third when Rinaldi started the inning with a triple and Wesleyan connected with two more hits, a hit batter and a walk.
Hamilton's Collins began the fourth inning with a double to center field, advanced to third on an error by the Wesleyan catcher and scored when Searcy forced an error by the shortstop to tie the score at 5-5.
Wesleyan scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth on three hits to take the lead for good and kept Hamilton to just three hits in the final three innings of play.
Collins and Searcy both finished 2-for-4 with a double. Brautigam added two hits and an RBI, Lin had one hit and one RBI, and Chivily went 1-for-2 with a walk. DePaulis kept Wesleyan scoreless on three hits as she finished the final 2.1 innings.
Marina Williams went 3-for-4 with one RBI and scored two runs. Rielly Wieners and Rachel Curran were both perfect at the plate with two hits. Rinaldi pitched a complete game and allowed four earned runs on 11 hits and three walks and she had 11 strikeouts.
