Softball concludes weekend series against No. 14 Williams

The Hamilton College Continentals wrapped up a three-game NESCAC West Division series against Williams College on Saturday, dropping a doubleheader by scores of 18-1 and 12-3 at Hamilton's Loop Road Softball/Baseball Complex.

Hamilton (7-11, 1-2 NESCAC West) won the first game of the series 4-2 on Friday evening.

Game One: Williams 18, Hamilton 1 (5 innings)

Williams (15-4, 2-1) -- ranked 14th in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division III Top 25 Poll -- scored three runs in the first inning, seven in the third, three in the fourth and five in the fifth.

Phoebe Collins '18 put Hamilton on the scoreboard in the bottom half of the third inning when she hit a leadoff single through the left side of the infield. Collins took second base on a passed ball and advanced to third when the Williams fielder dropped the ball before stepping on the base. Emily Fraser '20 followed with a grounder to the shortstop to score Collins.

Mackenzie Murphy had three of the Ephs' 14 hits, including two home runs for a career-high seven runs batted in. Murphy (0.95 earned run average) also won her fifth game of the season in the pitching circle, allowing four hits and one walk.

The Continental batters forced the Williams defense to make plays as they struck out only once and peppered the field with seven groundouts and seven flyouts. Williams' Murphy entered the weekend series averaging 5.52 strikeouts per seven innings.  

Caitlin Berreitter '20, Liz Brautigam '19, Jodi Weiss '19 and Collins recorded hits for Hamilton, and Fraser had one RBI and one walk.  

Game Two: Williams 12, Hamilton 3 (5 innings)

Williams pitcher Kirstin Mapes averaged over five strikeouts per seven innings before Saturday, but only managed to strike out two Continentals as Hamilton once again littered the field with seven hits, nine flyouts and three groundouts.

Kendall Searcy '20 finished 2-for-3 at the plate. Helen Lin '19 and Collins both hit doubles, and Lin scored two runs. Ashleah Yzaguirre '19, Weiss and Collins batted in one run each.

Jessica Kim went 2-for-2 with a triple and a home run, and Casey Pelz went 3-for-3 for Williams. The Ephs scored five runs in the first inning, three in the second, three in the third and one in the fourth.

Lin scored the first run for Hamilton in the bottom of the second inning when she earned a leadoff walk, advanced to second on a passed ball and scored when Weiss knocked a single down the left field line.

The Continentals added two runs in the fourth inning on three hits. Lin kicked it off with a double to the gap in left-center field and advanced to third base on a passed ball. Yzaguirre laced a run-scoring line drive to right field, and two batters later Collins ripped an RBI double to the fence in right-center field.

Hamilton hosts Cazenovia College on Thursday, April 5 for a non-conference doubleheader at 3:30 p.m.
