Box Score Keene State College scored the final four goals in the fourth quarter and the Owls rallied for a 15-14 non-conference win against the Hamilton College Continentals at Northeast Regional Park in Davenport, Fla., on Wednesday night.
Keene State's Connor Nolan scored the game-winning goal with 4:16 left in the fourth quarter. Nolan's goal completed a comeback from a three-goal deficit with 13:53 remaining in the quarter. Nolan ended the game with two goals on eight shots on goal, two ground balls and one caused turnover.
The Continentals (1-3 overall) had a chance to tie the score late following a shot clock violation by the Owls with 1:18 remaining. Hamilton had a good clear and immediately called a timeout, and with 30 seconds left Owls goaltender Mathew Howe (15 saves) denied a rip by Henry Hill '19 from 10 yards out.
Chris Conley '20 paced the Continentals with a career-high five goals and added two assists for a personal-best seven points. Conley scored all five of his goals in the first half and scooped up six ground balls. Chad Morse '19 and Hill scored three goals apiece, and Morse dished out an assist.
Matt Greene '18 led Hamilton's defensive unit with four caused turnovers and four ground balls. Kyle Gately '20 made 12 saves and Eric Zurmuehle '18 won 19 of 32 faceoffs with 12 ground balls.
Hunter Arnold led Keene State with four goals and picked up four ground balls. The Owls had a balanced offensive attack as five players scored two goals: Jon Nassif, Anthony Marcella, Nolan, Dave Wiedenfeld and Paul Beling. Steve Hamel caused three turnovers and had five ground balls, and Charles Molloy and JJ Downey both had four ground balls.
The score was tied at 2-2 with 7:16 left in the first quarter, but it was Hamilton that went on to take the 5-3 edge after the opening 15 minutes of play.
Keene State (3-2) responded with four unanswered goals to start the second stanza. Beling's goal at 6:44 gave the Owls a 7-5 lead. Conley stopped Keene State's momentum at 5:37 with his second goal of the game and his first of four goals in Hamilton's 5-0 run as the Continentals closed out the first half with a 10-7 lead.
Arnold got the Owls within two goals at the 9:31 mark in the third and he tied the score at 10-all just 1:46 later with the help of Marcella. Conley picked up back-to-back assists by finding Morse at 5:24 and Clay McCollum '19 at 3:35 to give the lead back to the Continentals. Hill made the score 13-10 with 2:57 remaining in the third on Hamilton's third straight goal, but Keene State pulled within two goals again after Wiedenfeld netted his second of the night at 1:34. Hill returned Hamilton's three-goal advantage at 14-11 just 1:07 into the fourth quarter, but the Owls kept the Continentals scoreless the rest of the way.
Hamilton is back on the turf at Northeast Regional Park on Saturday, March 17 to take on Bowdoin College for a NESCAC game at noon.
