Volleyball makes quick work of SUNY Polytechnic

Hamilton College's Courtney Brown '18 and Giuliana Rankin '20 smashed 12 kills apiece as the Continentals cruised to a three-set win against the SUNY Polytechnic Institute Wildcats in non-conference action at SUNY Poly's Wildcat Field House on Wednesday night.

The set scores were 25-16, 25-19 and 25-16. Hamilton (6-3 overall) finished with 27 more kills and eight more service aces than SUNY Poly, which ended up with a .062 hitting percentage.

Brown leads the Continentals with 2.61 kills per set. Rankin had just one error in 20 attack attempts for a .550 hitting percentage and added three blocks. Emma Parkhurst '21 passed out 34 assists, Margaret O'Brien '18 posted four blocks and Kayla Self '21 served three aces. Christine Zizzi '18 chipped in 13 digs and three aces. O'Brien leads the NESCAC and is tied for seventh in Division III with 1.27 blocks per set.

The Wildcats (5-10) were led by Karlie King's five kills. Sydney Johnson handed out 16 assists and added eight digs. Megan Will and Casandra Campion recorded three blocks apiece.

SUNY Poly led 12-11 in the first set when Hamilton took the lead for good with seven straight points. Dorothy Poucher '21 started the run with two kills and Meghan Wilkinson '19 ended it with an ace.

In the second set the score was tied at 16-all when kills by Nikki Matsuoka '21 and Rankin gave the Continentals a two-point lead. The Wildcats were still within a point at 19-18 but Hamilton all but clinched the set by rattling off the next five. Brown ended the run with two kills and Parkhurst finished the set with another.

SUNY Poly jumped out to a 4-1 advantage in the third set but the Continentals responded with a 6-0 run and led the rest of the way. The spurt featured kills by O'Brien, Rankin and Brown, and an ace by Parkhurst. The Wildcats didn't get closer than two points again and Hamilton's lead eventually reached as much as 10. A SUNY Poly service error ended the match.

The Continentals go on the road to face Tufts in NESCAC action on Friday, Sept. 29 at 8 p.m. It will be the first of six straight matches against conference opponents.
