Volleyball defeats Conn. College in NESCAC season opener

Hamilton College's Dorothy Poucher '21 hammered 13 kills and the Continentals posted a four-set NESCAC win against the Connecticut College Camels at Hamilton's Margaret Bundy Scott Field House on Friday night.

The Continentals (3-1, 1-0 NESCAC) dropped the first set 25-23, but roared back to win the next three (25-16, 25-23, 25-16) and handed the Camels their first loss. Serving played a big role in the outcome of the match as Hamilton recorded 12 aces to just two for Connecticut College. The Camels also had a half-dozen service errors.

Poucher, Emma Parkhurst '21 and Meghan Wilkinson '19 finished with three aces each. Parkhurst added 45 assists and Wilkinson helped lead the defense with 15 digs. Giuliana Rankin '20 smacked 11 kills and Margaret O'Brien '18 ended up with 10 kills and four blocks. O'Brien is in fifth place on the program's all-time list with 260 total blocks. Christine Zizzi '18 topped all players with 29 digs.

Connecticut College (6-1, 0-1) was paced by Sam Hunter's 18 kills and three blocks. Emma Hewlin chipped in 15 kills and three blocks, Katia Elisman passed out 34 assists and Elle Kass led the defense with 16 digs. Belinda Mullally contributed 10 digs and three blocks.

In the second set, the Continentals were clinging to an 18-16 lead before they pulled away by scoring the last seven points of the set. Wilkinson served a pair of aces, O'Brien came up with a big solo block and clinched the set with a kill.

Hamilton jumped out to a 12-7 advantage in the third set. The Camels regained the lead with a 6-0 run and neither team led by more than two points the rest of the set. Connecticut College still led 23-22 but a Camels' service error was followed by a Poucher ace and a set-clinching kill by Courtney Brown '18.

The fourth set was tight early with the teams tied 9-9 at one point. The Continentals took the lead for good with five straight points on two kills by Rankin, one by both O'Brien and Brown, and an ace by Poucher. Connecticut College was still within three points at 17-14 but Hamilton put the match away with a 5-0 run. O'Brien, Wilkinson and Poucher all had kills, and Poucher finished the run with a solo block.

Hamilton hosts Wesleyan University for another NESCAC match on Saturday, Sept. 16 at 1 p.m.
