Box Score Tufts University scored nine goals in the second quarter and the nationally ranked No. 2 Jumbos went on to post an 18-6 NESCAC win against the Hamilton College Continentals at Tufts' Bello Field on Saturday afternoon.
Hamilton (3-8, 1-6 NESCAC) plays its last three conference games at home as the Continentals will make a push to get into the 2017 NESCAC Men's Lacrosse Championship quarterfinals. Hamilton takes on Williams College at Withiam Field on Tuesday, April 11 at 6 p.m.
The Jumbos (11-0, 6-0) scored the last two goals of the first quarter and the first nine of the second as they built a commanding 13-1 lead. Tufts held a 48-32 shot advantage, owned a 36-23 edge in ground balls and was credited with 20 caused turnovers.
Clay McCollum '19 and J.D. Brachman '17 scored two goals apiece for the Continentals. Chad Morse '19 chipped in a goal and an assist. McCollum leads the team with 22 goals and 26 points and Morse has a team-high seven assists.
Connor Crutchfield '17 scooped up a career-high four ground balls, Matt Greene '18 picked up three and Zach Kleinbaum '19 caused a pair of turnovers for Hamilton. John Schisler '17 entered the game midway through the second quarter and made a season-high 14 saves. Noah Weissmann '18 started in goal and finished with five stops in 22-plus minutes. Jack Warren '19 won half of the 18 faceoffs he took.
Danny Murphy led the Jumbos with nine points on five goals and four helpers. Michael Mattson scored two goals and added an assist and Tyler Carbone found the back of the net twice. Twelve different Tufts players notched at least one goal. Henry Hollen won 13 of 19 faceoffs and collected eight ground balls. Carbone, Connor Lansdale and Arend Broekmate caused three turnovers each. Ben Shmerler started in goal and made four saves in the first half. Robert Treiber stopped six shots in 20-plus minutes and Jon Conley came up with two stops in the final 9:21 of the fourth quarter.
Murphy passed to Mattson for a man-up goal and a 1-0 lead with 11:01 left in the first quarter. Murphy made it 2-0 with 5:34 remaining in the first but McCollum scored a man-up goal on a pass from Jack Gaul '18 with 3:00 to go. Lucas Johnson started the Jumbos' 11-goal run with 1:55 left and Murphy pushed the lead to 4-1 with 46 seconds remaining.
Murphy racked up three goals and two assists in the second quarter as Tufts built a 12-goal lead. The Jumbos scored a man-up and a man-down goal in the second. Brachman posted a man-up goal with 47 seconds to go in the quarter and Tufts took a 13-2 advantage into the break.
The Jumbos led 14-3 after three quarters and 16-3 after a goal by Jake Geppert just 64 seconds into the fourth. Hamilton scored three times in the final 8:04, including the second goal for Henry Hunt '20 this season. The Continentals won 6 of 7 faceoffs in the fourth quarter.
