Box Score Wesleyan University racked up 13 hits and the Cardinals posted a 4-0 NESCAC West Division win against the Hamilton College Continentals at Hamilton's Loop Road Softball/Baseball Complex on Friday.
Hannah Staab '17 collected her 121st and 122nd career hits and 25th career double for the Continentals (10-23, 1-9 NESCAC West). Kendall Searcy '20 singled and was hit by a pitch, and Daphne Assimakopoulos '17 and Sophia Cerreta '20 had singles. Zoe Singer '18 (2-7) pitched the first 3.1 innings and took the loss. Desmen DePaulis '19 tossed 3.2 innings of relief and allowed one run on five hits. DePaulis struck out two and didn't walk a batter.
Hamilton's infield turned two double plays. The Continentals entered the day ranked 23rd in NCAA Division III in double plays per game and have turned 17 in all.
Julie McDonald led Wesleyan (11-18, 2-7) in the circle and at the plate. McDonald (7-9) hurled a five-hit shutout and issued just one walk. She also went 3-for-4 with a double. Rielly Wieners, Kendall Carr, Izzy Linzer and Christina Zaccardi finished with two hits each.
The Cardinals posted single runs in the first, second, fourth and fifth innings. McDonald led off the game with a double to right center, went to third on a Wieners single through the left side and scored on a line drive out to the center fielder by Hayley Lipson.
In the top of the second, Rachel Kantor led off with a line drive that deflected off the tip of the leaping second baseman's glove and fell for a hit. Linzer followed with a perfect bunt in front of the plate that she just beat out for an infield single. After the next batter was called out for making contact with the ball outside the batter's box, Zaccardi loaded the bases with a single to center. McDonald made it 2-0 with a single that landed just past third base and spun into foul territory.
Olivia Gorman drew a one-out walk in the top of the fourth, stole second base and came around to score on Zaccardi's single up the middle. Wieners led off the top of the fifth with a single through the right side, moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt and advanced to third on a base hit to left field by Carr. Linzer drove in Wieners with a two-out hit that barely snuck through the right side. Carr was thrown out at third base on the play by the right fielder Assimakopoulos.
Hamilton didn't get a runner past second base. The Continentals' best chance to put a run on the board came in the third inning when Staab hammered a one-out double to deep center field and Searcy was hit by a pitch with two away. Staab was forced out at third on an unassisted play by the third baseman.
The two teams play a NESCAC West Division doubleheader at Hamilton on Saturday, April 29. The first pitch of the opener is scheduled for 11 a.m.
