Hamilton loses to UMass Boston in spring break softball

Box Score

The Hamilton College softball team continued spring break play Tuesday, losing 7-2 to UMass Boston in Clermont, Fla.

The Continentals (0-3 overall) held a 2-1 lead after the top of the fourth before the Beacons scored six runs over the final three innings for the win.

Kendall Searcy '20 and Hannah Staab '17 had run-scoring hits in the first two innings as the Continentals took a one-run lead in each of their first two at-bats.

Searcy's one-out double to right center opened the scoring in the top of the first, bringing home Caitlin Berreitter '20, who was hit by a pitch to lead off the game.

After UMass Boston (5-1) tied the score with a two-out rally in the bottom of the first, Hamilton retook the lead in the second. Delaney Nicol '19 drew a one-out walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt then scored on Staab's single down the left field line.

Beacon pitcher Megan Hoben held the Continentals to one hit the rest of the game (a lead-off double by Phoebe Collins '18 in the fifth), retiring 15 of 16 batters before Collins reached on an error with two outs in the seventh.

UMass Boston scored three times in the fourth to take the lead for good. Kaitlyn Morse drew a bases-loaded walk to tie the game and the go-ahead run came home on a bases-loaded error before the inning's third run scored on a wild pitch.

Ari Bilotta and Lauren Mitsiaris (who singled twice) drove in runs in the fifth and Roxanne Vento drove in Morse with a two-out double in the seventh to close out the scoring. Vento doubled twice and scored two runs.

Hoben struck out five and walked just one in picking up her first win of the season.

The Continentals return to action Wednesday, facing the 19th-ranked SUNY Cortland Red Dragons in a 9 a.m. game in Kissimmee. Hamilton then plays Mount St. Joseph University at 1:30 p.m.
