Women's soccer bounces back to defeat Utica

Box Score

The Hamilton College women's soccer team beat visiting Utica College 1-0 in non-league play Sunday afternoon at Withiam Field. The win capped a stretch of four games in eight days for the Continentals, who went 2-1-1 in that span.

Hamilton (2-2-1 overall) outshot the winless Pioneers (0-7-0) 43-4 but went nearly 70 minutes without scoring, thanks to the stellar goaltending of Utica's Allison Wagner.

The game's only goal came off one of Hamilton's 14 corner kicks. Katie Kreider '18 sent the ball from the left corner to the near post where Fionn Fortune '20 volleyed the ball out of midair into the right side of the net. The goal marked Fortune's first collegiate point.

The Pioneers got off their only shot on goal about 10 minutes later when AnnaLisa McPhee collected a corner kick and fired a shot at the net that was saved by Hamilton goalkeeper Rachel Cooley '18. Cooley's shutout was the fourth of her career.

Wagner thwarted two Hamilton scoring chances in a four-minute span early in the second half. Hamilton's Amanda Becker '18 received a corner kick from Rachel Cady '19 and headed it from the middle of the box toward the far post, but Wagner took a step to her left and knocked the ball away to keep the game scoreless. After Becker sent a shot just over the top right corner of the goal -- set up by a centering pass from Liz Mathis '20 -- Wagner made a diving save at the near post, then lost control of the ball but recovered before Hamilton could get the rebound.

Hamilton continues its four-game homestand with a pair of weekend NESCAC games. The Continentals host Connecticut College Saturday and Middlebury Sunday at Love Field; both games are scheduled for 11 a.m. starts.
