Box Score The Hamilton College field hockey team opened NESCAC play Saturday afternoon in Lewiston, Maine, losing 4-3 to host Bates College.
The Continentals (0-2, 0-1 NESCAC) fought back to tie the score at 2-2 and pulled to within one with under five minutes left in regulation, but the Bobcats (2-0, 1-0 NESCAC) stopped a pair of Hamilton attempts at the tying goal in the last 2:44.
Eva Rosencrans '17 scored Hamilton's last two goals, raising her career totals to 39 goals and 86 points; she's now second on the program's all-time lists for goals and points after passing Sarah Feyerherm '86 for second in career points.
Tatiana Bradley '19 opened the scoring 6:13 into the opening period with her second goal in as many games. Sarah Stinebaugh '19 assisted on the goal, driving toward the net and drawing Bates' defense.
The Bobcats scored twice in a 4:24 span midway through the first to go up 2-1 before Rosencrans' first goal of the day knotted the score heading into intermission. She picked up a loose ball on the left side of the circle and slapped it inside the far post.
Bates scored the first two goals of the second period, outshooting the Continentals 10-6 after halftime.
Rosencrans' second goal of the game came with 4:03 to go and gave her nine multi-goal games in her career. She carried the ball up on a breakaway, then wheeled around a defender in the middle of the circle before shooting past Bates' goalkeeper.
The Continentals kept up the pressure for the remainder of the game, earning a penalty corner and attempting two last shots, including one with 40 seconds left that was saved.
Grace Fitzgerald and Jessie Moriarty scored second-half goals for the Bobcats, with Fitzgerald knocking a penalty corner in from near the left post. Hannah McLane had a hand in Bates' first two goals; her pass to Isabel Garcia-Moreno by the left post pulled the Bobcats into a tie. Less than four minutes later McLane cashed in a goal from in front after Alexandra Leahy circled past a Hamilton defender.
Adelae Durand and Alyssa Souza both made two saves in 35 minutes of action; Souza, who played the second half, earned the win. Julia Booth '19 made seven saves in the Hamilton cage.
The Continentals are back in action Tuesday, traveling to Geneseo for a 7 p.m. non-league contest with the SUNY Geneseo Knights.
