Softball bounces back to earn doubleheader split with Amherst

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Hamilton College softball team split a NESCAC West doubleheader with Amherst College Saturday, winning game two 10-5 after losing the opener 11-2. Saturday's games concluded a three-game series that had been scheduled for Hamilton's Ferguson Field but were moved to Amherst because of field and weather conditions. The Continentals, who are now 9-10 overall and 2-2 in NESCAC West play, remained the home team for all three games of the series.

Delaney Nicol '19 homered and drove in four runs to pace Hamilton's offense in the win. The Continentals didn't score in the bottom of the first after Amherst had taken a 1-0 lead, then put runs on the board in every inning on their way to the 10-5 win.

Phoebe Collins '18 and Caroline Chivily '19 hit RBI singles in the fourth to break a 3-3 tie and put Hamilton ahead for good. Nicol's second home run of the season highlighted a four-run fifth.

The Continentals took their first lead in the bottom of the second when Nicol's two-run single scored Ursula Castiblanco '19 (who was hit by a pitch) and Helen Lin '19, who reached on an error. Olivia Gozdz '16 singled home Chivily an inning later to give Hamilton a two-run lead before Amherst scored a pair of unearned runs in the fourth.

Lin scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fourth, drawing a leadoff walk and coming home on Collins' single to right. Two batters later Chivily's RBI single plated Collins.

In the fifth, Nicol's home run followed a sacrifice fly by Lin that brought in two runs. Mackenzie Doherty '18 scored from third on the play and Gozdz came in from second after an errant throw by Amherst's center fielder.

A run-scoring single by Castiblanco in the sixth closed out the scoring.

Zoe Singer '18 raised her record to 5-4, picking up the win with four innings of relief work. She allowed just one earned run.

Sammy Salustri and Lauren Tuiskula both had two of Amherst's seven hits. Salustri scored two of her team's five runs and drove in another.

Salustri and Tuiskula also paced the Amherst offense in game one – which was called after five innings because of the eight-run rule – combining for six hits. Salustri drove in three runs and Tuiskula scored three.

The Continentals scored both their runs in their final at bat. Chivily led off with a pinch-hit single and Ashleah Yzaguirre '19 was hit by a pitch before Liz Brautigam '19 singled home a run and Gozdz brought in a run with an infield grounder.

Brautigam had two of Hamilton's four hits.

Salustri's two-run double highlighted a six-run third for Amherst. Annie Murphy singled twice and scored two runs and Nicolette Miranda singled in a pair of runs in the fourth.

Hamilton continues NESCAC West action Sunday, playing a noon doubleheader at Wesleyan. The games are make-ups of a doubleheader originally scheduled for last weekend. The Continentals won last Friday's opener of the series 6-5.
