Box Score 2 Tufts University pitched a pair of shutouts against the Hamilton College Continentals in a clash between teams from opposite NESCAC divisions at Tufts' Spicer Field on Saturday afternoon.
The Jumbos (25-8 overall) won the first game 6-0 after they scored all six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Tufts -- a member of the NESCAC East Division -- completed the sweep with an 11-0 victory that was stopped after the top of the fifth due to the eight-run mercy rule. The three-time defending Division III champions went 18-2 during the month of April.
Hamilton (12-24) had scored 27 runs in a pair of wins against Morrisville State College on Wednesday. The Continentals, who play in the NESCAC West Division, collected seven hits in two games against Tufts.
In the opener, Hamilton's Molly Leitner '19 shut down the Jumbos on five hits through the first five innings. Leitner ran into trouble in the sixth, however, allowing seven of the first eight batters to reach base on four singles, a double and a pair of walks.
The Continentals didn't have a base runner until Olivia Gozdz '16 was hit by a pitch in the fourth inning and didn't have a hit until a single down the left field line by Hannah Staab '17 with one out in the sixth.
Hamilton's best chance to score was in the seventh inning when Gozdz led off with a single to center, Delaney Nicol '19 singled to right and both moved up a base on an outfield error. The next batter hit a ground ball to the shortstop who threw Gozdz out at home, and the next two hitters were retired on a fly ball to right field and a popout.
Erica County improved her record to 17-3 with seven shutout innings. County allowed three hits, fanned one and didn't walk anyone. Samantha Siciliano doubled and singled and Christian Cain added two hits.
In the nightcap, Raina Galbiati hurt the Continentals at the plate and in the circle. Galbiati moved her record to 8-3 with four scoreless innings as she scattered four hits and didn't issue a walk. She drove in the Jumbos' first run with an infield groundout in the first and added a two-run double the next inning.
Tufts scored in each of its four at-bats with two runs in the first inning, three in the second, five in the third and one in the fourth. Christina Raso singled twice, drove in two runs and scored twice. Cain went 2-for-2 with two runs scored.
Three Hamilton errors led to six unearned runs. Ursula Castiblanco '19 hammered her seventh double and 11th extra-base hit this year. Gozdz, Nicol and Liz Brautigam '19 added singles.
The Continentals wrap up their season with a non-conference doubleheader at SUNY Polytechnic on Tuesday, May 3. The first pitch of Game 1 is set for 3:30 p.m.
