Continentals taken down by Trinity in NESCAC season finale

Trinity College took the lead for good with five straight goals in the second quarter and the Bantams posted a 17-8 NESCAC win against the Hamilton College Continentals at Trinity's Sheppard Field on Saturday afternoon.

Hamilton (3-11, 1-9 NESCAC) held a 4-3 edge midway through the second quarter. The Continentals' strength of schedule is ranked second in Division III by Laxpower.com.

The Bantams (5-9, 2-7) scored six goals in the second quarter and netted a half-dozen more in the third. Ryan DeSimone led all players with five goals and six points.

Pat Donahoe '16 paced Hamilton with a career-high four goals. Joe Ricciuti '16 chipped in three goals and has found the back of the net eight times in the last two games.

Eric Zurmuehle '18 won 18 of 27 faceoffs and scooped up 10 ground balls for the Continentals. Zurmuehle has won 64 percent of his faceoffs this year and leads the NESCAC with 130 ground balls. He also scored his sixth goal of 2016. Jack Gaul '18 and Clay McCollum '18 were credited with one assist apiece, and John Schisler '17 made 12 saves.

Ben Knaus scored two goals and added an assist for Trinity. Stefan Pappas and Seth Bird notched two goals apiece and both Jack Sharrio and Michael McQuiston contributed one goal and one helper. Scott Morgan won 10 faceoffs and picked up five ground balls. Aidan Keohane caused three turnovers and Henry Coote stopped 13 shots.

Sharrio pulled the Bantams even with Hamilton at 4-4 with 4:28 left in the second quarter. It took DeSimone just 10 seconds to break the tie and give Trinity the lead. DeSimone made it 6-4 on his second goal in 26 seconds, and McQuiston provided a three-goal cushion with 1:39 remaining. DeSimone capped the run on his third goal with 10 seconds left in the half. The Bantams took an 8-4 advanatge into the break.

Donahoe cut the Continentals' deficit to three goals with 11:23 to go in the third quarter. Trinity then put the game away with six goals in a row. Knaus started the spurt with a pair of goals and DeSimone tallied a man-up goal with 7:30 left in the third. The Bantams tacked on three more goals in the final 2:53 of the quarter and enjoyed a 14-5 cushion after three quarters.

Trinity scored the first goal of the afternoon midway through the first quarter but Zurmuehle won the ensuing faceoff and tied the score 10 seconds later. John Caraviello put the Bantams back in front with 5:38 remaining in the quarter. Goals by Ricciuti and Donahoe 36 seconds apart late in the first gave Hamilton its first lead at 3-2.

Trinity's Matthew Barker scored 1:59 into the second quarter and tied things at 3-3. Donahoe, who has 14 goals this year, responded for the Continentals and put them back in front with 8:23 to go.

Hamilton wraps up this season with a trip to St. John Fisher College for a non-conference game on Tuesday, April 26 at 7 p.m.
