Softball topped by Bowdoin

Bowdoin College scored four runs in the top of the first inning and the Polar Bears went on to post a 9-4 win against the Hamilton College Continentals in Clermont, Fla., on Monday.

The score remained 4-0 until Bowdoin (6-3 overall) tacked on one run in the fifth and sixth innings. The Polar Bears put the game out of reach by scoring three more times in the seventh. Hamilton avoided the shutout by putting four runs on the scoreboard in its last at-bat.

For the Continentals (4-8), Ashleah Yzaguirre '19 tied a season high with three hits. Molly Leitner '19 tossed the first five-plus innings and took the loss. Leitner allowed three earned runs on eight hits and walked one.

Claire McCarthy led Bowdoin by going 4-for-4 with three runs batted in. Samantha Valdivia went 2-for-2 with two RBIs, Katie Gately tripled and singled, and Jordan Gowdy added two hits. Julia Geaumont held the Hamilton offense to two hits through six innings. Geaumont ended up with the complete-game victory as she allowed four runs on seven hits, walked one and fanned seven.

The Continentals broke out in the bottom of the seventh inning with four runs on five hits. Phoebe Collins '18 led off with a single, went to second base on a ground ball out and took third on a base hit by Delaney Nicol '19.

Hannah Staab '17 scored Collins with a single and Yzaguirre plated Nicol with another base hit. Ursula Castiblanco '19 smacked a two-out double to left field that drove in Yzaguirre and Staab with the game's final runs.
