Softball drops 2016 season opener

Anderson University scored six runs in both the fourth and fifth innings and the Ravens posted a 15-0 win in five innings against the Hamilton College Continentals in Clermont, Fla., on Sunday afternoon.

Hamilton was playing its first game of 2016 while Anderson improved its record to 2-1 overall. The Ravens have participated in the last five NCAA regionals and they advanced to the finals in 2013.

Olivia Gozdz '16 collected her 118th career hit for the Continentals and Ashleah Yzaguirre '19 recorded her first. Ursula Castiblanco '19 allowed one earned run in 3.2 innings in her first start in the circle.

Blake Thomas led Anderson on offense as she went 4-for-4 with two runs batted in. Megan Wade went 3-for-4 with two RBI, Samantha Ausmus tripled and singled, and Taylar Kelso doubled and singled. Ashley Cleverly tossed a two-hit shutout with five strikeouts and a walk.

Hamilton takes on nationally ranked No. 18 SUNY Cortland at 9 a.m. on Monday, March 14. The Continentals play Farmingdale State College at 11:15 a.m. Both games are in Kissimmee, Fla.
