Box Score The Hamilton College men's hockey team exploded for three first-period goals on the way to a 4-1 win over Trinity College Friday night in a NESCAC game in Hartford, Conn.
The Continentals remain unbeaten on the season with the win which snapped a nine-game winless streak against the Bantams, who are ranked 14th by D3hockey.com.
Hamilton (4-0-1, 1-0-1 NESCAC) is one of three undefeated teams remaining in Division III.
Tyler Bruneteau '18 scored two goals, Rory Gagnon '19 finished with three assists and Evan Buitenhuis '18 made 45 saves against the nation's highest-scoring team.
The Continentals took just over 10 minutes to score three power-play goals in the opening period against a defense that had yielded only seven goals in 300 minutes coming into the game.
Bruneteau opened the scoring just eight seconds after the Bantams were whistled for their first penalty. Truman Landowski '17 and Rory Gagnon '19 assisted on the goal at the 5:32 mark. Another Trinity penalty 1:28 later gave the Continentals another power play and Bruneteau put them up 2-0 with his second goal of the season. Jason Brochu '19 and Gagnon were credited with the assists.
Brandon Willett '18 capped the surge with 4:19 to go in the first, scoring his third goal of the year off assists from Bennett Morrison '20 and Conor Lamberti '17.
The Continentals' three-goal outburst gave them their highest-scoring first period since lighting the lamp three times in an 8-5 win over Wesleyan on Nov. 23, 2013.
After the hosts got on the board midway through the second period, Hamilton regained its three-goal lead 1:50 into the third. Brochu notched his third goal with Gagnon and Brad Smelstor '17 assisting.
Buitenhuis' 45 stops were a career-high total for a regulation game. He's posted a .949 save percentage in four starts against Trinity and this season he's compiled a .958 save percentage with a goals against average of 1.47.
Anthony Sabitsky scored the lone Bantam goal with Sean Orlando and Ryan Coyle assisting on the power-play chance with 8:35 remaining in the second period.
Alex Morin made 23 saves for Trinity, who outshot the visitors 46-27 but were assessed 30 penalty minutes.
The Continentals conclude their weekend series with a 3 p.m. game at Wesleyan Saturday. The host Cardinals (4-1-0, 2-1-0 NESCAC) upset Amherst 3-0 Friday night; Amherst is ranked 11th by D3hockey.com and 13th in the USCHO.com poll.
