Field hockey knocks off No. 10 Amherst in overtime

Box Score

The Hamilton College field hockey team knocked off a top-10 opponent for the second time in less than two weeks, rallying to beat nationally ranked No. 10 Amherst 4-3 in overtime Saturday at Amherst's Gooding Field.

The Continentals, who beat Amherst for the first time since 2011, are now 6-4 overall while the hosts fall to 8-3 on the season. Both teams hold 4-3 NESCAC marks.

Tatiana Bradley '19 scored the game winner 5:30 into the extra session after a back-and-forth second half that featured five lead changes and a goal credited at the 70:00 mark to force overtime.

Bradley's goal, her fourth of the season, came off the rebound of a shot taken by Margaret Revera '18. After Amherst goaltender Emilie Flamme made the save, Bradley controlled the rebound and made a move on a defender before putting the ball into the cage.

The wild final minute of regulation saw the hosts miss the net on a penalty stroke that would have tied the game, then score the equalizer with no time left on the clock after being awarded a penalty corner.

Hamilton trailed 1-0 at the half before taking the lead twice during the five-goal second period. Two quick goals in the opening minutes of the second gave the Continentals their first lead and Eva Rosencrans '17 put the visitors back ahead with 15:21 left in regulation.

Michaela Giuttari '20 and Sarah Stinebaugh '19 scored 72 seconds apart to erase Amherst's halftime lead. Giuttari tied the game 2:51 into the second half, picking up her ninth goal of the season after a scrum in front of the net that followed a pair of saves by Flamme. Hamilton took its first lead 1:12 later when Stinebaugh converted a rebound for her fifth goal after Flamme had saved a Rosencrans shot.

After a successful penalty stroke by Amherst tied the game four minutes later, Rosencrans notched a milestone goal to put Hamilton back on top.

Her go-ahead goal – which came on another rebound (this one of her own shot) – was her school-record 46th career goal. Rosencrans moved out of a tie with Colleen Callaghan '11 atop the program's all-time list. Rosencrans finished with three points, giving her 103 in her career; that total is second to Callaghan's 125.

The frantic final seconds of regulation started with the 12th of Amherst's 13 penalty corners. Mary Grace Cronin took the penalty corner, leading to a shot by Kendall Codey that Hamilton defender Sarah Kane '19 stopped for a defensive save to – temporarily – preserve the Continental lead. Amherst's Caroline Fiore was issued a penalty stroke but sent her shot wide of the net. The hosts were awarded another penalty corner as time expired and Cronin's ball resulted in a shot from the top left circle by Codey that Stoll tipped into the net.

Hamilton bounced back to dominate the seven-on-seven overtime session, sending four shots on goal in less than a minute. Flamme, who made 14 stops, saved the first three before Bradley's game winner.

Julia Booth '19 made seven saves to earn the win.

Stoll and Codey combined for the only goal of the first half, which was also a tip-in by Stoll of a Codey shot from the top of the circle.

Amherst's first penalty stroke was also taken by Fiore. She converted to tie the score at 2-2 with 26:39 left in the second half with her shot bouncing off Booth's pad and into the net.

Revera picked up the assist on Giuttari's goal, giving her a team-leading total of five this fall. She also assisted on a pair of goals against Amherst in last year's meeting.

The win was the second over a top-10 opponent for the Continentals this year; they posted a 4-2 victory over defending NCAA champion Middlebury (ranked third nationally at the time) on Sept. 25, recording the most goals given up by the Panthers in 52 games.

The Continentals return home to face Williams Tuesday at 5 p.m. at Goodfriend Field. The Ephs are receiving votes in the latest national coaches poll.
