Men's soccer wins in overtime to move on to NESCAC semifinal

Box Score

The Hamilton College men's soccer team advanced to the semifinal round of the NESCAC Championship, eliminating visiting Connecticut College 2-1 in overtime in Saturday's quarterfinal at Love Field.

With the win, the fourth-seeded Continentals will play sixth-seeded Middlebury (who upset third-seeded Williams 1-0 in another quarterfinal) in one semifinal Saturday, Nov. 5 at top-seeded Amherst. The host school will play seventh-seeded Bowdoin in the other semifinal; the two semifinal winners will meet in Sunday's final with the NESCAC's automatic bid to the NCAA playoffs at stake.

Mike Lubelczyk '17 headed home the game winner 2:49 into overtime to send the Continentals to the NESCAC semifinals for the first time. Hamilton was hosting its first postseason game since joining the NESCAC for men's soccer in 2011.

The Continentals (9-6-1 overall) have won three straight heading into their rematch with the Panthers, who posted a 1-0 win in Clinton on Sept. 27.

Lubelczyk's goal was his team-leading fifth of the season. His third game-winning goal of 2016 was set up by a centering pass from Alex Cadet '17 that he directed inside the right post from  about six yards out. Cadet also assisted on Hamilton's first goal, giving him a team-best five on the season.

The Camels fell to 10-5-1 on the season; their only two road losses were at Hamilton.

Hamilton owned a 19-10 advantage in shots, including a 9-5 bulge after intermission. Following the scoreless first half, the Continentals scored the game's first goal in the 49th minute when Eli Morris '18 converted a long cross that Cadet sent through the box. The ball went through the hands of Camel goalkeeper Mark Cameron and Morris put it in the open net for his first goal of the year.

The Camels evened the score midway through the period after Pat Devlin, the NESCAC's leading scorer, was awarded a penalty kick for the fourth time this fall. Devlin converted the opportunity for his 13th goal at the 67:18 mark.

Hamilton's Harris Pollack '17 earned the win in goal, stopping four shots. Cameron recorded seven saves.
