Lubelczyk '17 scores in men's soccer overtime setback

Box Score

Williams College's Chris Fleischer scored with 1:42 left in the first sudden-victory overtime period and lifted the Ephs to a 2-1 NESCAC victory against the Hamilton College Continentals at Hamilton's Love Field on Wednesday afternoon.

The Continentals (6-6-1, 4-4-1 NESCAC) have lost each of their last two games at home in overtime by the same 2-1 score. Hamilton is in fifth place in the conference standings with 13 points (3 for a win, 1 for a tie) with one NESCAC game remaining. The top four seeds host a NESCAC Championship quarterfinal on Saturday, Oct. 29.

Williams (8-2-3, 5-2-1) is unbeaten in its last four contests with two wins and two ties, and all four have gone to overtime. The Ephs jumped up into third place in the conference standings with 16 points and two NESCAC games to go.

Williams took advantage of a turnover near midfield to score the game winner. The loose ball popped out to Mohammed Rashid and he took off down the right side. Rashid drew the only defender who was back towards him and he slid a perfect centering pass to Fleischer. Goalkeeper Linds Cadwell '20 charged off his line towards Fleischer but he laced a low shot from near the edge of the 18 to Cadwell's left and into the back of the net as Cadwell dove for it. The goal was the first for Fleischer. Rashid leads the team with five assists and 13 points.

The Ephs grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute on a throw-in deep in the Continentals' defensive end. JC Bahr de Stefano lofted a throw-in into the box to Sean Dory, who had his back to the goal. Dory flicked the ball with his foot backwards over his shoulder and over the outstretched hand of Hamilton's starting keeper Harris Pollack '17.

The Continentals tied the score in the 27th minute when Alex Cadet '17 lofted a corner kick into the box. The ball bounced around a bit before Quinn O'Malley '18 got off a shot from close range that was stopped by a defender. The loose ball caromed to Mike Lubelczyk '17, who one-timed it into the right-hand side of the net from point-blank range for his team-leading fourth goal and 10th point. O'Malley picked up his first career assist.

Hamilton had two fantastic chances to score a second goal after the break. Less than two minutes into the second half, another corner kick by Cadet found the head of Eli Morris '18. Morris headed a hard shot towards the goal but the ball hit a teammate who was positioned on the goal line and the loose ball was cleared away.

The Continentals dominated the overtime period with five shots. In the 93rd minute Lubelczyk forced a turnover deep in Williams' defensive zone and went in one-on-one with goalkeeper Christian Alcorn. Lubelczyk's hard shot eluded the diving Alcorn but sailed just wide of the right post.

Hamilton held a 19-11 shot advantage, and the Ephs owned a 7-5 edge in corner kicks. Pollack made two saves in 45 minutes and Cadwell made a pair of stops in 53-plus minutes for the Continentals. Alcorn stopped four shots for Williams.

Hamilton travels to Colby College for the Continentals' NESCAC regular season finale on Saturday, Oct. 22 at 1:30 p.m. The Ephs head to Tufts University for a conference tilt on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
