Box Score Bowdoin College's Moctar Niang scored with a second left in the first sudden-victory overtime period and lifted the Polar Bears to a 2-1 NESCAC victory against the Hamilton College Continentals at Hamilton's Love Field on Saturday afternoon.
Bowdoin (7-3-2, 3-3-1 NESCAC) is 2-2-2 in games decided in overtime this year. The Polar Bears have gone to at least one extra period in six of their last eights contests.
The Continentals (6-5-1, 4-3-1) held a 12-10 edge in shots, including 8-4 in the first half. Bowdoin took eight corner kicks to Hamilton's one.
Niang headed in an Ethan Ellsworth corner kick just before the horn sounded to end the first extra period. The assist was the fifth for Ellsworth. The game winner wrapped up a busy 10-minute overtime that featured two shots by each team.
Niang also scored the Polar Bears' first goal just 2:29 into the first half on the first shot of the afternoon. Matty McColl sent a crossing pass from the right side outside the 18 into the 6-yard box where Niang headed the ball into the back of the net.
Killian Clancy '18 knotted the score at 1-1 on his third goal this year with 10:53 left in the half. Bowdoin was whistled for a handball about 20 yards out at the top of the box and Clancy buried the direct free kick.
Noah Safian's only two starts in goal for the Polar Bears this year have been their last two games. Safian made five saves, including one in overtime, and has a 2-0 record in net.
Harris Pollack '17 stopped four shots for Hamilton. The Continentals honored Pollack and six other seniors (Alec Talsania '17, Mike Lubelczyk '17, Tony Hernandez '17, Spenser Heller '17, Alex Cadet '17, Jake Hamill '17) before the game.
Hamilton hosts Williams for another conference contest on Wednesday, Oct. 19 at 3 p.m. Bowdoin travels to Williamstown, Mass., to take on the Ephs on Sunday at noon.
