Volleyball outlasts Conn. College in five-set NESCAC thriller

Hamilton College's Giuliana Rankin '20 posted 11 kills and five blocks and the Continentals collected an exciting five-set NESCAC win against the Connecticut College Camels at Conn. College's Luce Field House on Saturday afternoon.

Hamilton (5-4, 2-2 NESCAC) defeated the Camels for the first time since Oct. 19, 2002. The Continentals improved their record to 4-1 on Saturday this year.

Connecticut Coll. (7-5, 2-2) had won its last 13 matches against Hamilton. The Camels recorded a hitting percentage of just .025 and suffered 15 service errors.

Hamilton hit .250 (12-4-32) in winning the first set, 25-19. The Continentals won the second set by the same score before Connecticut Coll. rallied with 25-18 and 25-22 victories in the third and fourth sets. Hamilton settled down in the fifth set and breezed to a 15-8 triumph that clinched the match.

Rankin reached double digits in kills for the fifth time this year. Erin Donahue '18 notched her third double-double this season with 10 kills and 12 digs. Kyndal Burdin '18 led the team with 39 assists and 16 digs.

Meghan Wilkinson '19, who entered the afternoon ranked eighth in the conference in aces per set, served four of them against the Camels. Christine Zizzi '18 hammered three aces and helped lead the defense with 15 digs. Zizzi is third in the NESCAC in digs per set.

Margaret O'Brien '18 and Courtney Brown '18 provided more defense for the Continentals with seven blocks and 14 digs, respectively. O'Brien came into the day ranked fifth in the conference in blocks per set.

Connecticut Coll. was led by Jenny Kellogg's 14 kills. Katia Elisman passed out 33 assists, Maddie Rust smacked four aces and Josephine Oakley came up with five blocks. Alex McDevitt paced all players with 21 digs and Sam Hunter contributed 16.

After nine road matches to start 2016, Hamilton finally plays its home opener against Cazenovia College on Tuesday, Oct. 4 at 6 p.m.
