Box Score The Hamilton College men's soccer team suffered its first home loss in over a year, falling 1-0 to Tufts (7-5-1, 5-4-0 NESCAC) in NESCAC competition Saturday. The Continentals hadn't lost to a visiting team since Oct. 9, 2012, going 5-0-3 at Love Field since then.
The Jumbos scored in the 56th minute then held on for the win despite playing a man down for the game's last 17:23.
Max Hoppenot '16 had the game's only goal, scoring his team-leading fifth of the season. He took a long pass just inside the box, dribbled past a Hamilton defender and converted his shot to break the scoreless tie.
Tufts was issued a red card at the 72:37 mark, leaving the Jumbos with 10 player for the remainder of the game. The Continentals nearly tied the score shortly after the red card when a Tufts defender inadvertently headed the ball at his own goal before running it down and kicking it out of bounds.
Hamilton's best shot at the equalizer came with 6:50 left when a ball that had been volleyed in the air was collected by Dan Kraynak '15 with his back to the goal. Kraynak settled the ball, turned and shot from point blank range, but his shot was directly at goalkeeper Nick Moeser '16. The Continentals had two more shots before the end of regulation: Perry Nizzi '14 was wide right and goalkeeper Fred Porges '14, came up to midfield to take a shot that was blocked by a Tufts defender in the final seconds.
Moeser, who was making his first start of the season, finished with a pair of saves.
Hamilton had a pair of strong opportunities in the first half. Four minutes in, Griffin Abbott '15 received a pass at the left corner of the box and shot to the far post but was just wide with his attempt. With 12 minutes to go before intermission, Sam Rieder '14 saved a ball from going out of bounds in his own defensive third by sending it upfield to Kraynak who ran it down and eluded a defender before putting his shot over the crossbar.
The Jumbos almost took a 2-0 lead in the 63rd minute, but their goal was waved off when it was ruled that the player who scored had played while on the ground.
Before the game Hamilton honored its eight seniors; Teddy Clements '14, James Ehret '14, Yanki Hancioglu '14, Pat McGlynn '14, Ben Yudysky '14, Nizzi, Porges and Reider were playing their final regular-season home game.
The Continentals (4-6-3, 2-4-3 NESCAC) close out the regular season Wednesday at Williams; they can clinch the final spot in the NESCAC playoffs with a win over the Ephs coupled with an Amherst win at Trinity. Tufts, which has already secured a playoff bid, hosts Bowdoin Tuesday.
