CANTON, N.Y. – Hamilton College's
Charlie Sternberg '27 captured singles and doubles titles at the 2024 St. Lawrence University Fall Classic, which was held on Saturday, Sept. 7 and Sunday, Sept. 8.
Connor Griff '25 also won a singles crown as four Continentals reached the final of their draw.
Alejandro Fernandez '28 was Sternberg's doubles partner. The tournament marked the start of the fall portion of the 2024-25 season.
Sternberg went 4-0 as the No. 1 seed in "D" flight singles. He dropped just one game during the course of his first two matches before prevailing 8-3 over Hobart College's Tarang Malhotra in the semifinals. Teammate and No. 2 seed
Nicolas Gritz '25 was waiting for him in the final, but Sternberg was up to the challenge as he posted an 8-2 victory.
Gritz was challenged in his first two rounds with 8-6 and 8-5 wins. He breezed to an 8-2 victory against University of Rochester's Joshua Chu in the semifinals.
Griff, who is second on the team's all-time list with 59 singles wins, cruised through most of the tournament. The "A" flight's top seed lost seven games in four matches, and his best competition came in the semifinals where Rochester's Kavin Shukla pushed Griff to an 8-3 decision.
Coby Feldman '26 advanced to the "C" flight final as the No. 3 seed. Feldman coasted through the first three rounds with an 8-2 win in the opener followed by 8-1 triumphs in the quarterfinals and semis. Rochester Institute of Technology's Gabriel Escobar ended Feldman's run with an 8-1 decision in the final.
Fernandez and Sternberg won all four of their matches in the "B" doubles flight. They blanked their opponents in the first round and the semifinals, and claimed a 6-2 victory in the quarters. The final was much tougher, but the duo outlasted RIT's Escobar and Joel Pho, 6-4.
Hamilton competes in an invitational at Division I Colgate University on Saturday, Sept. 14 and Sunday, Sept. 15.
