WORCESTER, Mass. – Hamilton College finished third in the varsity eight petite final at the 2024 National Invitational Rowing Championships at Lake Quinsigamond on Sunday, May 12.
The Continentals won silver medals for finishing in second place in the third varsity eight grand final and the open four. Hamilton grabbed fifth place in the second varsity eight grand final.
The Continentals finished in sixth place out of 19 teams in the Women's Point Trophy team standings with 144 points. Tufts University captured the trophy with 207 points, Williams College was the runner-up with 179 and Wesleyan University finished third with 173.
This event doubled as the 2024 NESCAC Men's & Women's Rowing Championships. The Continentals ended up in sixth place out of eight conference entries in the varsity eight. Four NESCAC schools raced in the grand final and Bates College grabbed first place in the petite final. Connecticut College and Colby College raced in the third-level final.
Hamilton is ranked second in the New York Region by the NCAA in the varsity eight and team categories, but is first in the second varsity eight. The Continentals are ranked eighth in the Pocock Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Division III Top 15 poll.
Hamilton posted a time of 7:09.402 in the varsity eight petite final, while Bates' winning time was exactly six seconds faster. Ithaca College was the runner-up in 7:05.230. The Continentals were third in their morning heat with a time of 7:19.973. Williams (7:08.652) and Trinity College (7:09.740) finished ahead of Hamilton and advanced to the grand final.
The Continentals recorded a time of 7:25.522 in the second varsity eight grand final, which was a little more than 16 seconds behind the gold medalists from Williams. Hamilton took second place in its heat in 7:15.937 and Tufts was first (7:11.493).
The highlight of the day for the Continentals was their runner-up finish in the third varsity eight grand final with a time of 7:19.204. Tufts was the only boat ahead of Hamilton in 7:15.300. The Continentals also finished second to Tufts in their heat as Hamilton's time of 7:23.090 was less than nine seconds behind the Jumbos.
The Continentals were second out of five entries in the open four race with a time of 8:26.143. The University of New Hampshire's 'A' entry was the race winner in 8:04.611. Wesleyan, Skidmore College and a second UNH entry also competed.
