WORCESTER, Mass. – Hamilton College posted a strong showing in a field that featured five nationally ranked teams in the Jennifer McLaughlin Cup on Lake Quinsigamond on Saturday, April 6.
The Continentals, who are ranked ninth in the Pocock Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Division III Top 15 poll, finished second in the varsity eight grand final and third in the second varsity eight grand final. Hamilton's third varsity eight (7:06.1) defeated Clark University by nearly a minute in a head-to-head matchup.
Racing conditions on the 2,000-meter course included a 15 mph tailwind throughout with chop in the second 1,000 meters.
Nationally ranked No. 1 Wesleyan University won the varsity eight grand final in 6:33.07 and the Continentals were close behind in 6:36.69. No. 10 Worcester Polytechnic Institute (6:39.03), No. 6 Smith College (6:40.34) and No. 12 Clark (6:55.48) rounded out the grand final. Hamilton finished first in its morning heat with a time of 7:10.01, a little more than five seconds ahead of Clark.
In the second varsity eight grand final, Wesleyan (6:40.01), Smith (6:47.46) and Hamilton (6:50.46) finished in under seven minutes. WPI (7:01.38) and Clark (7:07.28) ended up in fourth and fifth place. Once again, the Continentals topped the morning heat with a time of 7:12.09, edging Clark by three-plus seconds.
