SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Hamilton College took home gold medals in the women's second and third varsity eight at the 2024 New York State Collegiate Rowing Championships held on Fish Creek on Saturday, April 20.
The Continentals, who are seventh in the Pocock Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Division III rankings, received a tough draw in the varsity eight. They ended up third in their morning heat and missed qualifying for the final. Hamilton easily took first place in the varsity eight petit final. The Continentals were also runners-up in the varsity fours petit final and grabbed first place in the novice fours Final 2.
Hamilton's winning time in the second varsity eight final was 7:41.006. No. 10 Smith College was second (7:44.609) and Marist College took third (7:46.487). The Continentals qualified for the final by winning their seven-boat heat with a time of 7:32.075. The heat included Marist, Smith, No. 12 William Smith College, No. 14 Rochester Institute of Technology, University of Rochester and St. John Fisher University.
Hamilton's time of 8:06.067 was more than 12 seconds faster than runner-up Smith in the third varsity eight. Smith had two entries in the race and William Smith, Skidmore College, Colgate University and Rochester also competed.
In the varsity eight petit final the Continentals' time of 7:46.053 outclassed Vassar College (7:56.722) and RIT (7:59.228). Hamilton's time was better than any of the boats that raced in the final, but unfortunately the showdown with No. 6 Ithaca College never took place. The Continentals recorded a time of 7:23.970 in their heat, but Marist (7:15.012) and Canisius College (7:19.388) were a bit faster. Hamilton would have finished second in the other two heats and therefore would have advanced to the final.
The Continentals posted a time of 9:06.146 and trailed only Union College (8:59.041) in the varsity fours petit final. Hamilton missed out on the final by finishing third in their heat in 8:40.961. Marist (8:17.081) and Long Island University (8:37.048) took the top two places and advanced to the final.
The Continentals topped four entries in their novice fours final with a time of 10:05.066. RIT finished more than 11 seconds behind in second place.
Hamilton races against Williams College and Tufts University on Lake Onota in Pittsfield, Mass., on Saturday, April 27.
