ITHACA, N.Y. – Hamilton College kicked off a busy spring rowing season with the Cayuga Duals on Cayuga Inlet on Saturday, March 30.
Nationally ranked No. 9 Hamilton lost to No. 8 Ithaca College in a head-to-head varsity eight matchup after the Continentals easily defeated Marietta College, which received votes in the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Division III Top 15 poll.
Racing conditions on the 2,000-meter course included minimal tail current with a 12 to 15 mph headwind gusting to 25 mph. There was some chop in the second 1,000 meters especially near the finish line.
Hamilton's varsity eight time of 8:01.6 was 9.6 seconds behind the hosts in the afternoon. The Continentals posted a time of 8:10.7 and finished 48 seconds ahead of Marietta in the morning.
Hamilton (7:55.9) finished well ahead of Ithaca (8:20.6) and William Smith College (8:38.1) in the second varsity eight race, and the Continentals (8:35.1) took down Ithaca (9:03.7) again in the third varsity eight. Hamilton (9:09.8) was an easy winner in a third varsity fours race against Ithaca (9:40.0) and William Smith (10:09.9).
The Continentals race in Worcester Polytechnic Institute's Jennifer McLaughlin Cup on Lake Quinsigamond on Saturday, April 6.
