No. 7 women's rowing takes fifth in varsity eight grand final

Continentals captured the top spot in the third varsity eight race

WORCESTER, Mass. – Hamilton College advanced to the varsity eight and second varsity eight grand final and the Continentals captured first place in the third varsity eight at the Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI)/Clark University Invitational held on Lake Quinsigamond on Sunday, April 14.
 
Hamilton, which is ranked seventh in the Pocock Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Division III Top 15 poll, finished fifth in the varsity eight grand final and was runner-up in the second varsity eight grand final.
 
Racing conditions on the 2,000-meter course included a cross-headwind that was gusty at times with moderate chop.
 
The Continentals qualified for the varsity eight grand final by finishing third in their heat with a time of 7:24.72. Hamilton's time in the grand final was 7:40.99. Just 18.3 seconds separated the six boats in the race. No. 3 Trinity College was the race winner in 7:25.25 and No. 4 Bates College (7:29.11) was the runner-up. No. 10 WPI (7:33.91) landed in third place, No. 5 Wellesley College (7:35.91) ended up in fourth place, and No. 13 William Smith College (7:43.55) rounded out the field.
 
In the second varsity eight the Continentals qualified for the grand final by finishing second in their heat behind Trinity with a time of 7:24.99. Hamilton followed the Bantams again in the grand final as the Continentals posted a time of 7:38.35, which was 4.05 seconds behind the winners. Bates finished third in 7:44.05.
 
Hamilton's winning time in the third varsity eight was 7:36.93. Trinity (7:46.47) was nearly 10 seconds behind in second place, and Wellesley (7:48.47) edged Bates by 37 one-hundredths of a second for third place.
 
Next up for the Continentals is the 2024 New York State Collegiate Championships on Fish Creek in Saratoga Springs on Saturday, April 20.
