No. 10 men's rowing edged by No. 8 Ithaca in varsity eight

Continentals also rowed against Division I programs Marist and Colgate on the Erie Canal

ROME, N.Y. – Hamilton College raced against Ithaca College, Marist College and Colgate University on the Erie Canal on Saturday, April 29.

In the morning nationally ranked No. 8 Ithaca's varsity eight defeated the 10th-ranked Continentals by 9.5 seconds with a time of 6:09.3. The Bombers made it a sweep against Hamilton by taking the second varsity eight by 11.8 seconds in 6:14.

Racing conditions were a 15 mph tailwind with 30 mph gusts and floating starts. The course became more bumpy in the second 1,000 meters.

"Due to high winds we relocated the race to our alternate race course further down the canal," Head Coach James Lister said. "High winds were certainly a good challenge for the Hamilton boats as we don't often experience those conditions. Our top boats were off pace a little in the second half of the races when the water was choppy. It was good practice to row in these conditions as we may experience it again this season."

The Continentals took on Marist in the varsity eight and second varsity eight in the afternoon and finished second again with times of 6:21.3 and 6:27.2, respectively. Hamilton ended up in third place against Colgate and Ithaca in the varsity four with a time of 7:59.5. Colgate was the race winner in 6:54.4.

"The caliber of racing was top notch with Colgate, Marist and Ithaca in attendance," Lister said. "The day was also a dedication to our seniors who have spent four years rowing for the Continentals."

Hamilton races in the New York State Collegiate Championships on Fish Creek in Saratoga Springs on Saturday, May 6. Racing begins at 8 a.m.
