WORCESTER, Mass. – Hamilton College finished in third place in the petite final of the women's varsity eight at the 2023 National Invitational Rowing Championships held on Lake Quinsigamond on Friday, May 12.
The 2023 NESCAC Men's and Women's Rowing Championships were also conducted at the event. The Continentals also finished sixth in the grand final of the second varsity eight and earned the bronze medal in the third varsity eight by taking third place in the grand final.
"The season has been about the depth of the program and it was certainly on full display at the NIRC/NESCAC Championships," Head Coach
James Lister said. "The varsity women posted their fastest time of the year in the petite finals with an overall ninth place finish. The third varsity 8+ had their fastest race of the season in the grand finals. In the Women's Point Trophy the team's performance claimed sixth place in a very competitive field of 17 programs. This is a great achievement for the program."
Nationally ranked No. 10 Hamilton was fourth out of six in its varsity eight heat with a time of 7:29.001 on Friday morning. The Continentals went much faster in the afternoon's petite final, posting a time of 6:48.941 in a tight race where the six boats were separated by about 12 seconds. No. 5 Ithaca College was first in 6:46.291 and No. 7 Wesleyan University was close behind in 6:47.401. Hamilton finished ahead of No. 8 Smith College, No. 12 Clark University and No. 14 Rochester Institute of Technology.
The Continentals put themselves in the grand final of the second varsity eight by finishing second in their morning heat with a time of 7:26.154. In a grand final that featured four other NESCAC schools and Wellesley College, Hamilton recorded a time of 7:06.058. Wesleyan was the winner in 6:50.350.
The Continentals were first in their morning heat of the third varsity eight with a time of 7:18.357. In the late afternoon grand final, Hamilton dueled with Williams College and Bates College for second place. Tufts University was the winner in 6:54.529, followed by Williams (6:59.189), the Continentals (7:00.379) and Bates (7:01.825). The medal is believed to be Hamilton's first at the National Invitational Rowing Championships.
The Continentals also had an entry in the open four, where they finished fourth out of six with a time of 8:23.846 early Friday evening. University of New Hampshire took first place in 7:51.795.
