Rowers with the Sanford Cup for the overall team points winner
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Nationally ranked No. 11 Hamilton College earned the bronze medal in the men's varsity eight at the 2023 New York State Collegiate Rowing Championships on Fish Creek on Saturday, May 6.

The Continentals also finished fourth in the second varsity eight and third in the varsity four petite final. The men helped Hamilton earn the overall team points trophy at the state championships for the first time.

"The men's and women's team were awarded the Sanford Cup which is the overall team points trophy," Head Coach James Lister said. "The Sanford Cup honors the Sanford family who has numerous contributions to New York State rowing. This is the first time in program history that Hamilton has won the cup. This honor speaks to the depth of the program over the past several years. It's exciting to see it come together at a championship event."

The Continentals ended up in third place in the first heat of the varsity eight as the top three boats were separated by just 1.1 seconds. Hamilton's time of 6:31.864 trailed Iona College (6:30.780) and No. 8 Ithaca College (6:31.285) in a thrilling finish. The Continentals crossed the finish line more than 10 seconds ahead of No. 13 Union College and No. 14 Rochester Institute of Technology.

Hamilton's performance was good enough to put the Continentals in the varsity eight grand final, and they responded with an even faster time of 6:29.396. No. 9 St. Lawrence University (6:24.201) edged Army (6:24.880) by less than a second for the victory.

There were no heats for the second varsity eight as Hamilton finished in 6:47.389 in the six-team event's only race of the day. Ithaca was the winner in 6:37.690, followed by St. Lawrence (6:44.213) and RIT (6:45.263).

In the varsity four the Continentals landed in fifth place in their heat with a time of 8:45.486. They moved on to the petite final and finished third out of four entries in a faster time of 8:39.424.

"All boats raced very well," Lister said. "This is what you work towards for this time of year. The men's varsity eight placed third behind strong St. Lawrence and Army teams. And the second varsity eight placed fourth in a tight field, just missing the podium finish by two seconds."

Hamilton competes in the National Invitational Rowing Championships, which double as the NESCAC Championships, On Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass., on Friday, May 12.
