Women's rowing runner-up in second varsity eight grand final at WPI

No. 10 varsity eight finished first in the petite final for the Continentals

WORCESTER, Mass. – Hamilton College women's rowing finished first in the varsity eight petite final in a regatta hosted by Worcester Polytechnic Institute on Lake Quinsigamond on Sunday, April 16.

The Continentals took second place in the second varsity eight grand final and they ended up in third place out of six entries in the third varsity eight.

Nationally ranked No. 10 Hamilton posted a winning time of 6:58.1 in the varsity eight petite final, and edged No. 13 Rochester Institute of Technology by 1.6 seconds. Earlier that morning, the Continentals landed in third place in their heat with a time of seven minutes flat. No. 2 Bates College (6:48.2) and No. 5 WPI (6:51.2) finished ahead of Hamilton in its heat.

The Continentals recorded a time of 6:59.4, which was just 2.7 seconds behind race winner Wellesley College, in the second varsity eight grand final. Hamilton finished 6.4 seconds ahead of Bates in third place. Earlier in the morning, the Bobcats had edged the Continentals by 1.7 seconds for first place in their heat. Hamilton's time was 7:04.7.

"Going to Worcester for a second weekend in a row was well worth the travel," Head Coach James Lister said. "The opportunity to race with more NESCAC, NEWMAC and Liberty League teams is valuable for our progress. The varsity 8+ and second varsity 8+ went under seven minutes, which is reflective of the quality speed in the program. The 3V8+ placed third in their event showing the overall depth."

In the third varsity eight the Continentals registered a time of 7:27.5. Bates (7:02.2) and Wellesley (7:07.9) finished ahead of Hamilton.

The Continentals are scheduled to row against RIT, Rochester, Wellesley, Smith, Vassar and Skidmore on Fish Creek in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., on Saturday, April 22.
