Hamilton College's
Connor Griff '25 and
Gianni Esposito '24 won singles flight titles as the men's tennis team kicked off the fall 2022 season at the St. Lawrence University Fall Classic, which was held at Sammis Tennis Courts and Newell Fieldhouse on Sept. 10 and 11.
In addition to the hosts, the Continentals also competed against players from Hobart College, Union College, Rochester Institute of Technology, Ithaca College and University of Rochester.
How It Happened
- In the A flight draw, Griff battled through his semifinal match and earned a huge 8-7 (10-8) victory. He went on to claim the title after defeating Rochester's Krish Vennam 8-2.
- Esposito advanced to the D fight final with a close 8-7 (7-2) semifinal win. In the final, Esposito picked up an 8-1 victory over St. Lawrence's Cole Hamilton.
- Anson Anderson '26 came out on top in the A flight consolation bracket as he cruised his way to the title with an 8-1 win.
- Eric Stein '23 defeated St. Lawrence's Ben Moolman and Ithaca's Jimin Woo before falling 8-7 (9-7) in the B flight semifinals.
- Lorenzo Gunningham '26 secured the B flight consolation bracket title with an 8-3 victory.
- Nicolas Gritz '25 made it to the C flight final where he was edged by St. Lawrence's Broderick Pinto 8-6.
- In doubles action, Anderson and Gunningham made a run to the A flight final before taking an 8-4 loss.
- Brian Wang '24 and Mark Apsey '25 advanced to the B flight semifinals before falling 8-3.
- Gritz and Esposito also reached the B flight semifinals where they came up short 8-7 (7-3).
Notes
- This was head coach Peter Arsenault's first competition with Hamilton.
- Hamilton combined for 23 wins in singles play.
- Esposito also won the D flight singles crown at the 2021 St. Lawrence Fall Classic.
- Griff notched a 13-7 singles record last season.
