Baseball completes weekend sweep with doubleheader win over Clarkson

The Hamilton College Continentals completed a three-game sweep over the Clarkson University Golden Knights with two wins on Sunday afternoon at Hamilton's Loop Road Athletic Complex.

After beating Clarkson (0-3 overall) by a 12-2 count on Saturday, Hamilton (3-0) took both games on Sunday -- 8-2 in the first game and 7-5 in the second.

The Continentals head to Florida where they will take on Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts for a single game at Lake Myrtle Field in Auburndale on Saturday, March 14 at 5:15 p.m.

Game 1: Hamilton 8, Clarkson 2

After three-and-a-half scoreless innings the Continentals recorded eight runs in the bottom of the fourth. Ethan Wallis '21 cranked an inside-the-park grand slam to right center that brought in Ethan Harrast '23, Rich Marooney '21 and Adam Wijaya '22Matt Zaffino '21 hit a double down the left field line that plated Jarrett Lee '21 and Zaffino scored on a single to shortstop by Phil Bernstein '23. Bernstein scored on a double down the left field line by Brady Slinger '22 and Slinger scored on a single to left field by Wijaya.

Clarkson scored one run in the top of the fifth on a single to left field and another in the sixth on a hit batsman. The Golden Knights left 13 runners on base.

Slinger and Lee both went 2-for-4 and Zaffino, Wijaya and Marooney all recorded stolen bases. Chris Keane '20 started on the mound and scattered four hits, walked one and struck out three in four innings for the win. Jamie Hauswirth '22 gave up one hit and walked one in 1.1 scoreless innings.

Game 2: Hamilton 7, Clarkson 5

Hamilton started the second game with a six-run first inning.

Wallis walked, stole second, advanced to third on a throwing error by the catcher and scored on a fielding error by the second baseman. Lee hit a single and advanced to second on an error, stole third and scored on a sacrifice fly by Bernstein. Zaffino scored on a passed ball after he reached first on an error, stole second and moved to third on another error. Ethan Murphy '22 hit a two-run double to left field that brought in Slinger and Sam Rowley '20, and Wallis doubled to left field and plated Murphy. Zaffino scored again in the bottom of the second inning after he led off with a single to left and then stole second. Slinger's single to left made it 7-0.

Clarkson scored three runs in the top of the fifth on a two-run double to right center and a sacrifice fly. The Golden Knights scored two more runs in the top of the sixth on two Hamilton errors. Clarkson put a runner on in the seventh, but three ground ball outs sealed its fate.

Slinger went 2-for-2, Lee went 2-for-3 and Zaffino went 2-for-4. Wallis and Lee stole one base apiece and Zaffino stole two.

Brendan Kastner '23 picked up his first career win after he pitched three innings and allowed two hits, walked three and struck out three. Jack Clougherty '23 pitched one inning and struck out one. Justin Schirmacher '20 pitched the last two innings and allowed one hit and two unearned runs, walked one and struck out one.
