Box Score Amherst College's Natalie Landau scored in the 26th minute and the nationally ranked No. 10/12 Mammoths held off the Hamilton College Continentals for a 1-0 NESCAC win at Hamilton's Love Field on Saturday.
Hamilton moves to 2-2-0 overall and is 1-2 in the NESCAC. Amherst (4-0-0 overall) remains unscored upon with two wins in conference play.
The Continentals peppered the net in the first half and held a 16-8 shot advantage, but Amherst's Antonia Tammaro turned away all six shots on goal. Tammaro finished with a career-high 10 saves. Rachel Pike '21 made six stops for Hamilton.
Kayleigh Harris '20 had the best chance to put Hamilton on the scoreboard in the first half. Cat Gambino '21 intercepted a pass 15 yards outside Amherst's box, deked around a defender and lofted the ball over the Mammoths' backline for an open shot by Harris. Harris one-timed the pass from the hashmark but the ball sailed just wide of the right post in the 29th minute.
Amherst took the lead with 19:50 left in the opening half when Isabel Stern threw the ball in from Hamilton's bench area to Landau in the corner. Landau split the defenders and rocketed a shot from the edge of the box that chimed off the back post and into the nylon.
Hamilton's Ashlyn Gaulin '23 nearly had the equalizer in the 62nd minute. Gaulin redirected a corner kick towards the opposite post but Amherst's Claire Nam came up big with a team save as she knocked the ball out of danger with her knee.
Hamilton makes a short trip to Utica College on Wednesday, Sept. 18 for a non-conference match at 4 p.m.
